Johnsonburg boys basketball brings core back from last year

JOHNSONBURG – Johnsonburg boys basketball brings back virtually its entire team from last season and looks to be one of the D-9 preseason favorites after a 23-6 record in 2011-2012.
The Rams come off a year which they were the D-9 runner-up and advanced to the second round of the PIAA Class A Playoffs, falling 50-45 in double overtime to West Middlesex at Clarion University.

Lady Elkers start over for new season

Ridgway girls basketball is looking to go back to basics this upcoming season in an effort to help build the program back up from two straight 1-21 seasons.
New varsity head coach Stacy Kifer said the girls have been focusing on fundamentals and refining skills.

Ridgway gymnastics features young team

Ridgway gymnastics will feature a young team this season with only one senior on the roster.
Ridgway graduated five seniors from last year’s team and move up seven freshmen to the varsity team.
“It’s a little different this year graduating as many seniors as we had last year. We’re extremely young. We’re sporting only one senior, Emily Pierce,” Ridgway coach Edna Maddalena said. “She’s a returning state qualifier so that helps but she’s our only senior. I have seven freshman that are new to gymnastics so that puts us at a very young stage but that’s OK, they’re learning quick.”

Ramettes seeking higher level of play in upcoming season

JOHNSONBURG – Now in his eighth season at the helm of the Johnsonburg girls’ varsity basketball program, Mike Zilkofski is looking for a little bit more this time around as his team prepares to storm the court.
“We’re hoping for bigger and better things this year,” Zilkofski said after posting a 13-10 mark last season and an early playoff exit Feb. 21 at East Forest. “It was a heartbreaker losing on the road to East Forest in the playoffs. They had a lot of seniors, a pretty good group there, and we just didn’t play well.”

A new era begins for Ridgway varsity wrestling

New faces will be all around the Ridgway wrestling program this season.
First-year head coach David Fordoski takes over as the varsity head coach for Ridgway wrestling after the retirement of Gary Gerber this past winter from that post. Fordoski said the team may be limited in varsity starting experience but the team is full of wrestlers with an excitement and work ethic for the program.

Johnsonburg wrestling ready for new season with increased goals

JOHNSONBURG – Johnsonburg wrestling enters this season with nine varsity wrestlers and a focus on winning more duals.
“As a team, our goal is to win half of our dual matches,” Johnsonburg coach Mike Votano said. “Last year, we won two matches. I believe we have a few more numbers this year if we can stay healthy. Looking at other team’s lineups, there’s a chance we could win half of our dual matches, we set that as our team goal.”
Johnsonburg starts with nine on the varsity level.

Municipal authority approves operating budget

The Ridgway Township Municipal Authority approved the 2013 operating budget during their regular meeting Thursday night.
Finance Manager Jeff Schutz briefed officials on a budget that has a total estimated operating revenue of $986,870.

Johnsonburg school board using grant monies to purchase laptops

JOHNSONBURG – Johnsonburg School District is a recent recipient of a grant they will use to purchase laptop computers.  
“The district received a $6,534 grant from the Elk County Community Foundation,” said Dennis Crotzer, Superintendent. “This money will be used in conjunction with our title money to purchase 15 laptops for the teachers.”

Municipal authority increases water rates

JOHNSONBURG – Following a lengthy executive session the Johnsonburg Municipal Authority [JMA] voted to increase water rates during their regular meeting Tuesday night.
Effective Jan. 1, residents can expect a $10 per month increase in their water bills.

Johnsonburg team remembers key playmakers in 2012

JOHNSONBURG – With a 2-7 season in the rear view mirror and the Johnsonburg varsity football program in serious jeopardy due to lack of player turnout and graduation, the current coaching staff paused Sunday for a season-ending banquet and paid tribute to the team's playmakers.
"Our seniors worked extremely hard in the summer and they were the heart and soul of this program," said Johnsonburg varsity football coach Jesse Schreiber. "They really wanted it and I was glad to be able to coach them."
