KANE – Johnsonburg track and field will be sending multiple athletes to the PIAA Track and Field Championships after the District 9 Championships held Friday at Paul R. Miller Stadium in Kane.
Gabbi Benninger broke the Ridgway triple jump and qualified for states with her triple jump mark of 37-10.5.
Lanae Newsome of Brookville broke the D-9 meet record with her mark of 40-3.5 in triple jump. Newsome also broke her own 100-meter dash record with a time of 12.38 to win that event.
ST. MARYS – Local police are looking for the person, or persons, responsible for a pair of explosive devices found within days, and miles, of each other in Elk County this week.
Mary S. Butera, 87, of 326 Allenhurst Ave., Ridgway, passed away, Friday, May 17, 2013, at Elk Regional Health Center.
She was born in Platania, Italy, the daughter of Luigi and Pasqualina Butera, and sister of Frank M. Butera, who preceded her in death.
Wounded veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, amputees and others bearing invisible scars, were in Ridgway Friday for a long-range shooting event, part of a larger initiative intended to aide them in their transitions back into civilian life.

JOHNSONBURG – Effective Aug. 1 the Johnsonburg Fire Department will discontinue operation of its Quick Response Service [QRS].
ST. MARYS – The Pennsylvania Lottery announced yesterday that a $2 million winning ticket in Wednesday's Powerball drawing was purchased at the Sheetz in St. Marys.
WEEDVILLE – With plans to drill near a Jay Township watershed on hold, EQT announced at Thursday's meeting of the township Board of Supervisors that they will begin hydraulic fracturing of four wells, at another location in the township, by month's end.

Ridgway baseball won their second game in as many days with a 10-4 win over Curwensville Wednesday afternoon at Sandy Beach Recreational Park.
"Coming off of that win [Tuesday] night, you weren't going to know what to expect because you're turning around and playing roughly less than 24 hours later," Ridgway coach Mark Morelli said.
ERIE – A federal court has ordered that a St. Marys woman's prison salary of between 12 cents and 40 cents an hour be used to pay over $1.5 million dollars in restitution to her victims.
KERSEY – Over 200 fifth grades students participated in Elk County Safety Day held Tuesday at the Elk County Fairgrounds in Kersey.
