Dam project completion pushed back to 2019

JONES TWP. – The completion date to the extensive East Branch Dam repair project has been pushed back to 2019, two years later than originally anticipated. The $280 million project entails constructing a full-length, full-depth concrete cutoff wall through the dam to reduce risk and restore the dam to normal operation.
On Wednesday morning representatives from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Pittsburgh District reported the delay during an East Branch Dam Safety Project Stakeholders meeting.

County's gun permit system on hold

Elk County's gun permit system in the sheriff's department recently crashed, thus placing over 250 applications in limbo according to Chief Deputy Sheriff Theresa Merritt.
The computer system's hard drive "fried" recently and "people cannot physically get a gun permit" from the county's sheriff's department.

Sheriff's Department part of Project ChildSafe

The Elk County Sheriff's Department on Wednesday afternoon announced the county's inclusion in the Project ChildSafe initiative.
The directive is a nationwide program that promotes safe firearms handling and storage practices among all firearm owners through the distribution of safety education messages and free firearm safety kits.

Price cut on Ridgway Armory building

The minimum bid price for the Ridgway Armory has been reduced by 20 percent after the state Department of General Services posted the site in September 2013.
The minimum bid is now $88,000; it was previously $110,000.
The property was first put up for bid with a historical covenant requiring the preservation of the building's exterior; this requirement has since been wiped out.

Mystique Boutique opening downtown

A new business is opening in the historic Udarbe Business Towers, located along Court Street in downtown Ridgway. Mystique Boutique, operated by Steve Lynch in conjunction with Linda Russell and Jean Capuano, is a specialty store with an array of items including antiques, gifts, jewelry, clothing and custom gift baskets.

johnsonburg track and field sweeps Sheffield

JOHNSONBURG – Johnsonburg track and field hosted Sheffield in a meet held Monday afternoon at Johnsonburg Area High School.
Johnsonburg won the girls meet 97-21 and took the boys meet 81-66.

Healthy Kids Day this Friday

The Ridgway YMCA is hosting a "Healthy Kids Day" event on Friday from 5-8 p.m.
The event will feature a gymnastics demonstration from 5-6:30 p.m.; a puppet show at 5:45 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.; family Zumba from 6:45-7:30 p.m.; along with face-painting, crafts, balloon fun, pool games, and snacks from 5:30-8 p.m.

Court date is delayed for driver in 6-fatality crash

SMETHPORT – A change has been made in the next court date for a Kane woman charged in connection with a horrific six-fatality crash Aug. 31.
Kathleen S. "Kathy" Douglas, 37, had been scheduled to appear Thursday in McKean County Court in Smethport to enter a plea in the case.

Dill waived for court on child porn charges

ST. MARYS – A St. Marys man was waived for court Tuesday by Magisterial District Judge Mark Jacob on multiple felony counts of child pornography.
Ronald Gregory Dill, 58, of 207 N. St. Marys St., Apt. 1, was arrested on March 7 following a three-month investigation by agents in the Office of Attorney General's Child Predator Section. According to the charges, Dill was found to be in possession of more than 30 video files depicting child pornography on his laptop computer.

Policies updated for county repository

The Elk County Board of Commissioners on Tuesday reviewed their new policies regarding the sale of properties from the repository.
Repository properties are available for the general public to purchase free and clear of any liens. Interested parties must place a bid with the bureau for the property and then all three taxing bodies (the local municipality, the local school board, and the county commissioners), must approve the bid for all the property to be sold. There is no minimum bid required for repository properties, according to documentation obtained from the county's Tax Claims office.
