Emporium apartment house damaged in fire

EMPORIUM – Authorities are still investigating the origin of a fire that spread through four apartment units early Tuesday morning in a West 4th Street house in Emporium.
Initial reports indicated smoke and flames showing at 234 W. 4th St. as Cameron County 14 (Emporium Fire Department), Emporium Ambulance, and St. Marys Ambulance were called out shortly before 3 a.m.

Assault charges against Ridgway man

Assault charges have been filed against a Ridgway man for a June incident of an argument escalating into a fight that left another man hospitalized.
Jeffrey William Reitz, 26, of 229 Ash St., Ridgway, is charged with a felony count of aggravated assault and a misdemeanor count of simple assault for a fight that occurred at his home on June 29.

Borough approves 1 mill tax increase

Following a public comment meeting to allow residents to address concerns in the 2015 budget, the Ridgway Borough Council approved a 2015 budget, which featured a one mill tax increase for the borough's general fund, during a special meeting on Tuesday night.
The budget was approved following a 5-2 vote by the council with council president Ralph Dussia and councilman J.R. Geitner standing out as the two council members who did not vote to approve the budget.

Borough among fiscally responsible for contaminated landfill

The Ridgway Borough will be responsible, at least in part, for a $314,000 bill associated with the cleanup at the Ridgway Borough Municipal Landfill, according to DEP press aide Amanda Witman.
DEP officials originally started investigating the landfill in 2004, and now that the project is nearing completion, the DEP is looking to receive reimbursement from responsible parties for the costs associated with the project.

Ridgway Lady Elkers win JV tournament

ST. MARYS – Ridgway girls basketball won the 2014 girls junior varsity tournament, defeating Elk County Catholic 25-21 Tuesday night at Elk County Catholic High School.
"It feels awesome to win this tournament," Ridgway junior varsity coach Dina Fullem said. "I am really proud of the girls. They really wanted to win tonight and their efforts on the court proved it. The smiles on their faces at the end of the game said it all."
Emily Fullem led Ridgway with a game-high 14 points while Cassidy Cunningham had 13 points for the Lady Crusaders.

Cribbs sentenced in burglary, thefts

A St. Marys man had multiple cases settled before President Judge Richard A. Masson Monday, including the February theft of multiple parking meters from the Brusselles and Depot Streets parking lots in St. Marys.
David Larry Cribbs, 19, of 155 Washington St., St. Marys, pleaded guilty to a felony count of receiving stolen property and a felony count of burglary for removing items from a storage building owned by Elk County Ammo and Arms.
"I had some problems with drugs, and I was just kind of being a bum," Cribbs said when Judge Masson asked why he hadn't found employment while on parole.

Donald W. “Gabby” McLaughlin

Donald W. “Gabby” McLaughlin, 87, of Reedsville, died at Tuesday, December 23, 2014 at 12:40 p.m. at his home.
He was born Nov. 29, 1927 in Ridgway, Elk County, son of the late Quinn and Helen (Winslow) McLaughlin.
He is survived by his children, Donald W. McLaughlin Jr. and wife, Ashley, Sue McLaughlin, Kay Lewis and husband, Randy, and Lynn Glendye; one brother, David McLaughlin and wife, Marjorie; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Coaches vs. Cancer raises over $1,180

ST. MARYS – This year's Coaches vs. Cancer campaign, held throughout both days of the Elk County Holiday Basketball Tournament, raised $1,186.89 to benefit the American Cancer Society.
During halftime of the boys' championship game Saturday evening at the St. Marys Area High School Dutch Oven, SMAHS Activities Director Terry Straub read a brief message on behalf of the American Cancer Society, which expressed appreciation to the "coaches and players for lending their talent and faces to the 2014 Coaches vs. Cancer campaign."

Ridgway Elkers beat Crusaders in OT for boys County title

The Ridgway Elkers captured the 2014 Elk County Boys Holiday Basketball Tournament Saturday night at the St. Marys Area High School Dutch Oven by defeating the Elk County Catholic Crusaders by a 37-33 score in overtime.
