Elkers down Dutch 58-49 to advance to tourney finals

ST. MARYS – The Ridgway Elkers used a strong second half to advance to the championship game of the 32nd annual Elk County Boys’ Holiday Basketball Tournament to defeat the St. Marys Area Flying Dutchmen by a 58-49 score.
The Elkers will now meet the Johnsonburg Rams tonight at 8 p.m. for the boys’ championship. Johnsonburg defeated the Elk County Catholic Crusaders 40-37 in Wednesday’s nightcap.
Ridgway outscored the Dutch 13-4 in the third period to turn a 34-30 St. Marys halftime lead to a 43-38 Elker lead at the end of the third quarter.

Rams hold off Crusader rally, win 40-37

ST. MARYS – The Johnsonburg Rams held off a second-half rally by the Elk County Catholic Crusaders in yesterday evening's first-round game of the Elk County Holiday Boys' Basketball Tournament, winning 40-37 to advance to tonight's championship game versus the Ridgway Elkers.
Early on it looked like the Rams would have no trouble from the Crusaders as they outscored them 13-2 in the first period and 9-7 in the second quarter to take a 22-9 halftime lead.

Lady Crusaders advance to championship

ST. MARYS – The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusaders will play in the championship game of the Elk County Girls' Holiday Basketball Tournament after a 59-25 victory over Ridgway Thursday afternoon at St. Marys Area High School.

Johnsonburg School District gets Kindles

The Johnsonburg Area School District recently purchased 24 Kindles for all of their Special Education Classes using grant money. 
“This technology has sparked an interest in the students’ reading,” said Mary Bizzak, Special Education Reading teacher to third and fourth grade. “They come into class everyday asking if we are going to use the Kindles today. I hope that the students will develop a love for reading through the use of these Kindles.”
The Kindles help and encourage the students with an important skill.

Dutch junior high defeats ECC 42-33 in championship game

ST. MARYS – The St. Marys Area Flying Dutchmen junior high basketball squad won the championship game of this year's ECCHS Boys Junior High Basketball Tournament, defeating the Crusaders 42-33 on Wednesday evening at ECC.
In the consolation game, Ridgway defeated Brockway 54-18.

Neither team was able to gain much of an advantage in the first period and the back-and-forth action left the score tied at 7-all at the end of seven minutes of play. St. Marys came alive in the second quarter, outscoring ECC 14-5 to take a 21-12 halftime lead.

Lady Crusaders edge Lady Dutch for jv tournament title

ST. MARYS – The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusaders edged the Lady Dutch 31-26 in the title game of the ECCHS Girls Junior Varsity Basketball Tournament at ECCHS on Wednesday evening.
In the consolation game, the Johnsonburg Lady Rams defeated the Ridgway Lady Elkers 39-16.

The first period of play saw the score knotted up at 7-all; however, the Lady Dutch outscored the Lady Crusaders 8-6 in the second quarter to take a slim 15-13 halftime lead.

Ridgway Elkers capture junior varsity tourney crown

ST. MARYS – The Ridgway Elkers captured the ECCHS Boys’ Junior Varsity Basketball Holiday Tournament Wednesday night by defeating Elk County Catholic by 57-39 score in a game played in the ECCHS main gym.
The St. Marys Area Flying Dutch defeated the Johnsonburg Rams 36-29 in the consolation game.
Championship game
The championship game saw both teams score 13 first quarter points. The Elkers outscored the Crusaders by a 16-6 margin to open a 29-19 halftime lead.

Holiday Tournament to continue battle against cancer

ST. MARYS – The annual Elk County Holiday Basketball Tournament, featuring the girls' and boys' varsity basketball squads from St. Marys Area High School, Elk County Catholic High School, Johnsonburg Area High School and Ridgway Area High School, kicks off this afternoon at the SMAHS gymnasium, and will once again feature a variety of fundraisers for the Coaches vs. Cancer program.
According to Roben Daghir, volunteer survivor for outreach and awareness, there will once again be a Coaches vs. Cancer table located in the foyer near the main entrance to the gymnasium.

Angel Giving Tree project provides for area youth

This year 221 children from Cameron, Elk, McKean, and Potter counties received gifts and clothing as part of the 2011 Pat Work Memorial Christmas Project.
Now in its third year, the project is an endeavor of Dickinson Center, Inc. (DCI) and named in memory of Patricia "Pat" Work, a therapist with the organization for several years prior to her death in 2003.
"Pat worked with children and always made an extra effort at Christmas to make sure they had gifts, etc.," said Heidi Thomas, chief fiscal officer/chief operations officer for Dickinson.
