A rare blue moon will appear tonight although it is unlikely that it will actually appear blue. The name applies to a second full moon inside a single calendar month. The last one was in August 2012 and the next will not occur until 2018. If it does appear blue, it is possible and has happened, it will be because the light is being filtered through air borne particles.
