Crash on Ridgway Johnsonburg Road

RIDGWAY TWP. – A vehicle crash was reported late Wednesday night in the vicinity of 1456 Ridgway Johnsonburg Road in Ridgway Township. Elk Company 4 (Ridgway Fire Department) was dispatched along with the Ridgway-based state police shortly after 11:30 p.m. No further information was available at press time.

North Central discusses updates on rail project

Timothy Potts, general manager of the north operation for the RJ Corman Railroad Company visited North Central's quarterly full board meeting Wednesday to discuss the progress towards an "economic development project."
The project, which is expected to revitalize nearly 20 miles of railroad between Curwensville and DuBois that would connect RJ Corman's railroads to the Buffalo & Pittsburgh railroad, is being discussed by North Central as a significant economic development that could open up the region to additional markets, according to North Central Executive Director Eric Bridges.

Brothers waived for court in boating accident

JOHNSONBURG – Brothers involved in a canoe accident that claimed the life of Brittany Baird of DuBois waived their preliminary hearings at Magisterial District Judge George "Tony" King's office Wednesday afternoon and will proceed to the Elk County Court of Common Pleas.
Angelo Vincent Varischetti, 22, and Anthony Steven Varischetti, 26, both of Brockway, are charged with several counts of operating watercraft under influence of alcohol, reckless operation of watercraft and negligent operation of watercraft for the May 24, 2014 incident on the Clarion River near Ridgway.

Kane nurse returns after treating Ebola patients in Africa

KANE – It wasn’t that long ago that Kane native Trisha Wright was fulfilling a dream as the first athletic trainer in the Kane Area School District.
“I got paid to watch sports and help kids when they were hurt,” Wright said. “I loved it.”
She sometimes dealt with serious injuries such as concussions and broken bones.
Most often, Wright was just another spectator at school athletic events.
“You hope you’re not busy,” she said.
A 1994 graduate of Kane High School, Wright served as the school district athletic trainer for 12 1/2 years between 1998 and 2010.

Firearm stolen from St. Marys funeral home

ST. MARYS – A St. Marys man was arrested Tuesday for theft of an antique rifle, a Winchester Model 1892 44-40, from the property of Lynch-Green Funeral Home where he was formerly employed.
Based on the victim's statements, Sgt. Thomas Nicklas of the St. Marys Police Department went to the residence of Richard Alan Prow, 60, of 346 N. Michael St. where the rifle was located in Prow's car.
According to the affidavit of probable cause, Prow stated that he had found the rifle while cleaning the garage of the funeral home property during his employment there. He said he was told he could have it.

Jury call upcoming for alleged killer

A St. Marys man charged in the September 2013 shooting death of June Talmadge is scheduled for jury call Monday, Feb. 2 at Elk County Court.
Michael J. Stephanic Jr., 45, of St. Marys, faces charges of criminal homicide, two felony counts of aggravated assault and a felony charge of discharging a firearm into an occupied structure for the incident that occurred at Eastern Sintered Alloys.
Monday's court session will be Stephanic's last opportunity to enter a plea before proceeding to jury selection, which is currently scheduled for Feb. 9.

Alleged Bradford killer is placed in county jail

BRADFORD – A Bradford businessman who allegedly shot and killed his son-in-law earlier this month has been placed in the McKean County Jail.
Stephen Daniel Stidd, 62, of 725 E. Main St., Bradford, is accused of criminal homicide in the death of Melvin Daniel Bizzarro, 43, also of Bradford.
Stidd allegedly shot Bizzarro about 9:30 a.m. Jan. 16 behind Togi’s Restaurant at 412 E. Main St., Bradford.
When Stidd appeared for his arraignment Jan. 16 before Bradford District Court Judge Dom Cercone, bail was set at $100,000. Stidd was free after posting $10,000 cash-- 10 percent of the bond.

New recycling center closer to reality

The Elk County Solid Waste Authority made the first official contribution towards a proposed $2 million recycling center to be built in St. Marys.
During the monthly Elk County Solid Waste Authority meeting Tuesday, the authority's board approved a motion to create a new bank account for the St. Marys recycling center project, which included a $100,000 contribution by the solid waste authority.

District reviews 2014, plans for 2015

The Elk County Conservation District held its first meeting of 2015 on Monday which included some review of 2014 as well as discussions looking towards the future for the district.
District manager Steve Putt reviewed the yearly program summary for 2014, which was an ongoing tally of all the permit requests that have come through the Elk County Conservation District since 2011.
Putt said the conservation district had seen a significant increase in erosion sediment control plans and general permits throughout the 2014 year.

Two St. Marys men charged in armed robbery

Two St. Marys men have been arrested and charged in connection to a home invasion and armed robbery that occurred on Jan. 7 at 119 Sunrise Rd.
Kyle Lee Sarginger, 25, and Spencer Gene Rudolph, 19, both of St. Marys, are facing multiple felony charges related to armed robbery for allegedly going to a home and robbing a woman for prescription pills.
According to the affidavit of probable cause, Rudolph kicked in the door and said, "Give me all your drugs and money" and threatened to kill the victim while brandishing a handgun.
