William A. "Bill" Liscinski

William A. "Bill" Liscinski, 83 of 624 Maple Ave. in Ridgway and formerly of 304 Clarion Rd., Johnsonburg died on the afternoon of Saturday, Aug. 23, 2014 at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville following a brief illness.
He was born on December 1, 1930 in Johnsonburg, son of the late John and Mary Gulash Liscinski
He married Dorothy Polaski on August 25, 1951 in Holy Rosary Church in Johnsonburg. She survives.
Mr. Liscinski resided in Ridgway for the past several years. He lived most of his life in Johnsonburg and graduated from Johnsonburg High School in 1948.

ECCSS adopts Scent-Free Environment Policy

The 2014-2015 school year begins on Tuesday, and as part of a new endeavor to make faculty, staff, students, and visitors more cognizant of the fragrances of products they use and how those odors impact those around them, the Elk County Catholic School System (ECCSS) has adopted a new Scent-Free Environment Policy.

Local fallen hero remembered

Mary Parziale Bentz, of Washington, D.C. and formerly of Brockway, recently released a book with her husband Richard entitled "We Remember Them: A Biographical Supplement for Fatal Dive."
"We Remember Them" contains biographies of the crew of the World War II submarine the USS Grunion, which sunk near the Japanese-occupied Aleutian Island of Kiska on July 30, 1942.

Elk County Farm Bureau addresses pension reform

ST. MARYS – As part of its annual legislative tour, Elk County Farm Bureau members discussed several issues of importance impacting the agricultural industry currently being debated by state legislators.
Among the Farm Bureau's top concerns are pension reform, accountability of gas well operators and surface landowners and exemption from state sales tax for timbering operations.
"We work on legislation vital to agriculture, but also to all walks of life in Pa.," said Elk County Farm Bureau Governmental Relations Director Ernie Mattiuz.

Mae Jean (Wyant) Rishel

Mae Jean (Wyant) Rishel, 85, of Shenango Presbyterian Sr. Care, New Wilmington, and formerly of New Bedford, died Tuesday, Aug. 19, 2014 at Shenango Presbyterian Sr. Care in New Wilmington.
She was born March 7, 1929 in Punxsutawney, daughter of the late John Calvin Wyant and Sidney Myers.
She married Robert Clair Rishel on July 20, 1948, he died Sept. 25, 2012.

Ridgway skatepark set for improvements

The Ridgway Borough, in partnership with the Ridgway YMCA, has been granted $5,000 by the Ridgway Heritage Council to pay for repairs and cosmetic work for the Ridgway skatepark.
Main Street Manager Michelle Bogacki said that in the spring, the equipment would be resurfaced and repainted, but the immediate focus for this year will be on safety.

Commissioners respond to comments

The Elk County Commissioners released a statement late Thursday morning in response to reports concerning an investigation into the county's Sheriff's department. The statement was signed by commissioners Jan Kemmer, June Sorg, and Dan Freeburg. It reads:

Pittsburgh's Action News 4's Amber Nicotra has the latest on the charges expected to file possession of marijuana charges against Steelers running backs Le’Veon Bell and LeGarrette Blount. Bell will also be charged with driving under the influence by Ross Police.

New Civil Air Patrol squadron based in Elk County

ST. MARYS – Elk County recently became home to a new Civil Air Patrol (CAP) squadron with a focus on aerospace education, emergency services and cadet programs.
The Elk County Composite Squadron 507 is under the direction of
Squadron Commander Alan McPherson and 2nd Lieutenants Bill Laird and Faisal El-Awar, all of whom are pilots. Senior member Jim Weichman acts as the group's historian and financial advisor.
