John L. Brendlinger

John L. Brendlinger, 78, of 764 Shelvey Summit Rd., Kersey, died Tuesday, March 6, 2012 at the Kindred Hospital in Beaver following a brief illness.
He was born Feb. 1, 1934, in Clyde, son of the late Arthur and Ruth (Boring) Brendlinger. He married Martha M. Blessel Wonderly on Nov. 17, 1979. She preceded him in death on Nov. 21, 2011.
He was a member of Maria Lutheran Church in Dagus Mines and a member of the Bells of St. Marys and the Ridgway Sportsmen's Club. He had been employed by Exotic Metals and retired from Carbon City Products.

Phyllis F. Bauer

Phyllis F. Bauer, 80, a resident at Ridgmont Assisted Living, Ridgway, and formerly of 126 Penn Rd., St. Marys, died on Thursday morning, March 8, 2012 at DuBois Regional Medical Center.
She was born Aug. 30, 1931 in St. Marys, a daughter of the late Marion and Leona Fritz Ford.
On June 21, 1952 in St. Mary's Church, she married the late Clarence "Lefty" Bauer, who preceded her in death on Sept. 22, 2009.

Chorus Festival starts tonight

The Region II State Chorus Festival concert begins tonight with a 7 p.m. show at the Ira S. Nippes auditorium in the Ridgway Area High/Middle School.
The choir is under the direction of host director Theresa Morley-Palmer, a music instructor at Ridgway, and Dr. Tony Leach of Penn State University.

Pursuing a chance to help others

WILCOX – Bailey Pretak of Wilcox never aspired to be a model, but always loved being in front of the camera. This desire has motivated her to enter the Maurices Main Street Model Search.
The contest is through the Maurices clothing store chain, and the winner will be featured in all of the advertising and receive $7,500 to go to a charity of the winner’s choice.
Pretak entered the contest by submitting photos and an essay. Now she is relying on the public to enter the next round.

Johnsonburg high school produces "The Sound of Music"

JOHNSONBURG – The Johnsonburg High School is producing "The Sound of Music" for the upcoming weekend’s festivities. Show times will be Friday, March 9 at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, March 10 at 1 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Ginger Schreiber, Drama Club Advisor says this year’s production has 10 percent of the student body.
“It seems like more and more kids come out every year,” Schreiber said. “This year we have 34 children, and there are only 340 kids in the whole school.”
Singing, dancing and action won’t fall short this year.

Zelcs ready for D-II National Wrestling Championships

Gannon University redshirt freshman and 2010 Ridgway High School graduate Zack Zelcs is ready for the Division II National Wrestling Championships which will take place this Friday and Saturday in Pueblo, Colo. at the campus of Colorado State University-Pueblo.
Zelcs said the goal of making it to nationals was something he has always had.
“It’s pretty much the same as it’s always been,” Zelcs said. “I’ve always had my mind focused on being at nationals so that shouldn’t be a surprise. I’ve been training for the same thing the entire season.”

Commissioners act on fees

The Elk County Commissioners voted Tuesday morning in favor of "impact fees" that will be assessed on Marcellus Shale and Utica Shale natural gas wells throughout the county.
"This enables the Public Utility Commission [PUC] to come in and gather the fees that are allowed under this act," said Elk County Commissioner Daniel R. Freeburg. "A portion of it will be returned to the counties and municipalities.
"We've had calls from the public asking us to do this-- we've had discussions with industries and they seem to be at least not opposed to it."

Details emerge about SR 255 project

ST. MARYS – PennDOT's Dean Ball updated city officials on Monday evening regarding the proposed timelines of the massive road reconstruction project taking place next year along State Route 255, encompassing a large section of the Million Dollar Highway.
Currently the project is on schedule and will be advertised this fall with hopes the contractor will begin by late fall. Also progressing smoothly are right-of-way acquisitions which will be ready for the advertisement of the project.

Mission trip teaches students life lessons

Several area students recently had a hands-on life lesson in service as they participated in a week-long mission trip to the Dominican Republic. The students were part of a group of area residents who took part in the trip, which was held through the organization Meeting God in Missions. While all eight are currently students at Elk County Catholic High School, they noted that the trip was not a school-sponsored function.

Mass mailer concerns residents

A mass letter mailed to Ridgway area residents claiming water service coverage to homeowners is causing concern.
Ridgway Borough Manager Martin Schuller is advising residents to be wary of a letter from HomeServe USA.
Schuller says he is not advising residents to use or not to use the service, but to read the fine print before making any decisions.
