Veterans' organizations need younger members to survive

As more servicemen and women return home with the de-escalation of the War on Terror, veterans' organizations like the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), with their ever-diminishing ranks, see the younger generation as the last hope and their membership as vital to the longevity and even the existence of these organizations.

Conservation District to hold free workshop for farmers

The Elk County Conservation District [ECCD] was awarded a $1,000 mini-grant from the Pennsylvania Association of Conservation Districts [PACD] to co-host a Manure Management Workshop with the Cameron County Conservation District.
"PACD is offering mini-grants for Districts to host manure workshops, so we decided to take advantage of this opportunity and host a workshop," said Conservation District Manager Steve Putt.

Cuddling Kids quilt drive under way

ST. MARYS – Quilts for babies and toddlers are being collected until March 31 as part of the Cuddling Kids project sponsored by Tangled Threads, a quilting supply store located on Erie Avenue in St. Marys.
"We are asking all quilters to look into their hearts and give to this wonderful project," said Emily Snelick, co-owner of Tangled Threads. "We are accepting any types of quilts - flannel, cotton, fleece, etc."

Michael J. Carr, age 56, of 641 Shelvey Summit Road, Kersey, died suddenly at the Elk Regional Health Center, on Saturday, Feb. 25, 2012.
He was born March 15, 1955, in Hope, Maine, the son of Clarence J. and Madine L. LaBranche Carr. On Aug. 7, 1977, he married Judith A. Caggiano, she survives.

Music director in need of host families

Ridgway Area High School Music Director Theresa Morley-Palmer is looking for residents to open up their hearts and their homes and volunteer to house two more students during the regional choir competition.
As a host family, volunteers would provide a place for students to sleep on March 7, 8 and 9, a shower, a breakfast and a ride to and from school at 7:30 a.m. and 8:30 p.m.
According to Palmer, 160 students from 53 schools will be coming to Ridgway Area High School to audition for a chance to compete in the State Music Festival in Lancaster in April.

Leslie J. Haas, 64, of 475 Lance Dr., Ridgway, died unexpectedly in Ridgway Township on Friday, Feb. 24, 2012.
He was born Sept. 12, 1947 in Allentown, a son of Marlowe Arner Haas of Emporium and the late James Haas.
On Aug. 17, 1969 in Williamsburg, Va., he married Janet Hutchens Haas, who survives.

Alice L. Ehrensberger

Alice L. Ehrensberger, 84, of 45 Plum St., St. Joseph's Terrace, Weedville, and formerly of Bucktail Road, St. Marys, died Saturday, Feb. 25, 2012 at the DuBois Nursing Home after an illness of the past several months.
She was born Dec. 31, 1927, in St. Marys, daughter of the late Allie and Agnes Dollinger Eckert. On April 21, 1947, in St. Marys, she married Wayne L. Ehrensberger, who preceded her in death on Oct. 8, 1993.

Area wrestlers, contributors inducted into Hall of Fame

CLARION – Area wrestlers, coaches and contributors were inducted into the District 9 Wrestling Hall of Fame Saturday night at Clarion University during the District 9 Individual Wrestling Championships.
The area inductees were Terry Dietrick and Curt Olson from Ridgway along with Francis Iorfido of Johnsonburg and Ben Keebler of St. Marys.

Elkers qualify eight for regionals, Bush wins third district championship

CLARION – Ridgway wrestling will send eight competitors to the Northwest Regional Championships next weekend along with a district champion after the District 9 Individual Championships held at Tippin Gym at Clarion University Saturday.
Ridgway finished with eight regional qualifiers and a 4-0 record in the third-place matches. The Elkers finished with a championship and three runner-up finishes.

Elkers move on to district semifinals after 65-48 win

After two years of losing in the district quarterfinal, Ridgway boys basketball can say it's over the hump and among District 9's final four.
Ridgway used a strong last 2:40 of the third quarter to create some distance from Sheffield en route to a 65-48 victory over the Wolverines Friday night in the District 9 Class boys basketball quarterfinal held at Ridgway Area High School.
