Thief strikes memorial garden

A recent act of theft has riled Elk County Historical Society Director Mary Kalinowski.
Three days after planting the Alyce J. Bowers Memorial Garden located in front of the Elk County Historical Society's Center House Museum at 109 Center Street in Ridgway an unknown actor(s) stole three Celosia flowers from the garden.
The Celosia with its colorful flame-like flower head was a favorite of Alyce who passed away on Monday, Nov. 7, 2011 in the early morning.

School district approves budget without tax hike

JOHNSONBURG – Residents of the Johnsonburg Area School District will not see an increase in taxes after the Board of Directors approved a general fund budget for the 2012-2013 fiscal year in the amount of $10.6 million with a $91,778 increase in expenditures from the 2011-2012 year.
Board Treasurer Patricia Calkins said the district has not raised taxes in about 10 years.
The tax levies approved during Thursday night's regular meeting are the same as last year and are as follows:

Task force looks at water source protection efforts

RIDGWAY - Steps to strengthen source water protection were discussed at an Elk County Gas Task Force meeting earlier this week.
Jodi Foster, community and economic development coordinator for the Elk County Planning Department, said Watershed Specialist Kim Bonfardine is ready to start source water monitoring in Brockway. She noted that although Brockway is in Jefferson County and not in Elk County, the reason for the monitoring is because much of Brockway's source water stems from Elk County.

Task force discusses transport of hazardous materials

During a meeting of the Elk County Gas Task Force held earlier this week, task force chairperson and Elk County Commissioner June H. Sorg asked guest Bruce Manning, director of the McKean County Emergency Management Agency, about concerns some residents had brought up about trucks that transport hydrofracturing fluid or hazardous chemicals to and from Marcellus drilling sites.

Kids triathlon Saturday

Area youth are getting geared up for the Ridgway YMCA Kids Triathlon scheduled for Saturday at 11 a.m. at the popular North Broad Street facility.
"We added a new division this year, a team division," said Mary Lynne Bellotti, Ridgway YMCA executive director. "With three kids on a team, one will swim, one will bike and one will run. We're excited about that change and I think it is a great event for the kids.
"Each child goes home with a participant ribbon and a whole lot of memories."

ECC yearbook receives Jostens National Yearbook Design recognition

ST. MARYS – While Elk County Catholic High School students and their faculty advisors are working to put the finishing touches on the school's 2011-2012 yearbook, they know that they have some high standards to meet as the 2010-2011 edition was featured in Josten's 2012 "Gotcha Covered Look Book."
"We were the only school in Pennsylvania that was selected," said ECC yearbook advisor Laura Anderson. "There were over 3,000 schools that were involved and only 400 were chosen."

Supervisors approve county-wide hazard plan

BROCKPORT – The Horton Township Board of Supervisors approved a county-wide hazard mitigation plan during Wednesday's regular meeting.
Resolution 270-12 was developed to provide a blueprint for reducing property damage from natural and manmade disasters in Elk County.
"Elk County passed it," said Secretary Dennis Thompson. "They are going to go by the county's plan in case there are natural disasters. We just have to say we are going to go along with their plan instead of trying to make one of our own."

Loren J. Liptak, 69, of 213 Garfield St., Ridgway died Wednesday morning at the V.A. Medical Center in Altoona. He was born June 14, 1942 in Ridgway, son of the late Joseph and Rosemary (Murnaghan) Liptak. He married Karin L. Perlick on November 17, 1972, she preceded him in death in 1977.

Stanley R. "Patsy" Redmond Jr., 85, of 804 Dill Hill Rd., Johnsonburg and 174 Soneto Ct., SE, Port St. Lucie, Fla, died Tuesday evening, June 12, 2012, at UPMC Hamot Medical Center, Erie, following a brief illness.
He was born on March 23, 1927 in Falconer, N.Y., son of the late Stanley R. and Mildred Tarnoski Redmond. On Sept. 23, 1950, in the Sacred Heart Church, St. Marys, he married Leah R. Dornish, who survives.

School District approves budget

Residents of Ridgway will not see an increase in property and occupation taxes after the Ridgway Area School District Board of Directors adopted the 2012-2013 General Fund Budget during Tuesday night's regular meeting.
Finance Manager Brent Rhoads presented a budget with revenues and expenditures of $11,831,371 with a decrease of $191,734 compared to last year's budget.
The breakdown of the budget includes: local revenues of $4,645,326; state revenues of $6,876,108; federal revenues of $116,000; a use of fund balance of $43,937; and a grant contingency of $150,000.
