New event hits Chautauqua area

The Chautauqua Art Challenge, an event inspired by the Ridgway Chainsaw Carvers Rendezvous, is scheduled to hit Mayville, N.Y. on Sept. 24-29.
The weeklong event, conjured up by Rendezvous genius Rick Boni, will feature a painting competition, clay competition, cardboard/fabric sculpture competition, ice carving competition, and wood carving competition.
"It's a wonderful opportunity," said Liz Boni of Appalachian Arts Studio. "It was probably a couple of years after the Rendezvous where Rick [Boni] thought it'd be really neat to have an event where you're really challenged.

Timber sales may bring campground

Following a recommendation from the Fire, Police, Property and Equipment Committee the Ridgway Borough Council approved the use of timber sale proceeds to fund a potential site for a proposed camping area during Monday night's regular meeting.
The committee and guests reviewed a map of the potential site for a proposed wilderness campground located on borough property along Water Works Road.
Borough Manager Martin Schuller will notify solicitor David Pontzer concerning the use of timber sale proceeds to fund the project.

Lady Elkers soccer dominates Port Allegany, 9-3

To say Ridgway girls soccer is scoring goals in bunches would be an understatement.
The Lady Elkers put up a season-high in goals as Ridgway overwhelmed Port Allegany with a 9-3 victory Monday afternoon at Francis S. Grandinetti Elementary School.
“Our offense took control,” Ridgway coach Greg Maddalena said. “They (Port Allegany) did score first. We answered back right away. The girls are just up, they’re playing. Everything right now is all positive, very positive. I just got so many offensive threats, I just want to run with it.”

Johnsonburg tennis edges Lady Dutch 5-4

The St. Marys Area Lady Dutch tennis team lost a tough 5-4 match to the Johnsonburg Ramettes Monday afternoon at the SMAHS courts.
"I never had a group that worked harder than these girls, they are a very good group and their parents should be as proud of them as I am, win or lose," Johnsonburg coach Gregg Dauber said.
At first singles, SMA’s Amy Orr defeated Riley Fannin 6-1, 6-2.
At second singles, SMA’s Aubrey Wiesner defeated Josie Del Rio 6-0, 6-0.
Danielle McCoy of the Lady Dutch defeated Andrea Allegretto 6-2, 6-4 at third singles.

Geise publishes photography book on Elk Scenic Drive

Those who want to bring home some of the beauty and inspiring sites from along the Elk Scenic Drive may now do so with a recently published photography book by area resident Marci Geise.
The book, which is appropriately titled "Elk Scenic Drive," contains 46 pages featuring 73 photographs that, according to Geise, highlight "many points of interest that are located along the Elk Scenic Drive."

Richard L. Frederick

Richard L. Frederick, 64, of Hector, N.Y., died Saturday, Sept. 15, 2012.  
He was born June 1, 1948, in Ridgway, son of the late John and Alma (Yonkie) Frederick.
On Sept. 29, 1995, in St. Marys, he married Cathy (Mosier) Frederick, his loving wife of almost 17 years.
Dick lived in the Ridgway and Kersey areas until he moved to Hector in 1999. He worked as a mechanic, truck driver and equipment operator for Doyle Vineyard Management in Hammondsport. He loved hunting, fishing and racing. 

John F. Smith

John F. Smith, 63, of 161 Ford Rd., St. Marys, died Saturday, Sept. 15, 2012 at UPMC Passavant Hospital in Pittsburgh following a lengthy illness.
He was born Dec. 27, 1948 in St. Marys, son of the late William and Jane Krug Smith.
On Sept. 19, 1970 in Rasselas, he married Louise E. Olewinski, who survives.
He was a lifelong resident of the area and was a graduate of St. Marys High School, Class of 1966. He was an employee of the former Pure Carbon and retired from Morgan AM&T in 2011 after 47 years of service.

Ridgway wins Bucktail Tournament

ST. MARYS – The Ridgway Lady Elker soccer team captured the 14th annual Bucktail Tournament championship by defeating the Bradford Area Lady Owls by a 5-1 score Saturday afternoon at the SMAHS soccer field.

Schlimm takes medalist honors at Bradford

Ridgway's T.J. Schlimm took medalist honors at the 18-hole Bradford Invitational held Saturday afternoon at Penn Hills Country Club.
Schlimm shot a 74, including a 35 on the front nine.
"It was a great tournament for us in preparation of next Monday's District 9 Tournament," Ridgway coach Dave Zawatski said. "None of the kids had ever played the course, and they did a nice job under windy conditions. What a performance for T.J. Schlimm to fire a 74 and win medalist honors in such a talented field."

Updates provided on East Branch safety initiative

As part of the long-term East Branch Dam Safety Initiative project, lake personnel continue to work closely with staff from the Pittsburgh District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in overseeing the construction of a new cutoff wall inside the dam.
The $280 million project is in response to a safety issue related to potential internal erosion discovered in 2008, similar to a seepage issue encountered in 1957 which required the lowering of the lake for repairs. The multifaceted project has a completion date of 2017.
