Schlimm leads Crusaders to district title game

One is the loneliest number.
Elk County Catholic (16-6) dealt previously undefeated Johnsonburg (20-1) a stunning 5-2 defeat Wednesday afternoon at Sandy Beach Recreational Park, ousting the No. 1 seed from the District 9 Class A baseball playoffs in the process. Throughout the season, one run was often times the difference in a game for the Rams; on Wednesday, just one loss spoiled their season and kept them out of both the district title game and the state playoffs.

Valjean Rae Ward

Valjean Rae Ward, 54, of Emporium, died Tuesday, May 29, 2012 at UPMC Montefiore, Pittsburgh, after a short illness.
She was born April 4, 1958 in Ridgway, daughter of the late John L and Ruth M. (Watson) Ward.
She worked at Elcam in St. Marys and lived most of her life in Ridgway and the past few years in Emporium. She attended Emporium churches and Sheltered Workshop of Ridgway.

Johnsonburg track and field honored with banquet

JOHNSONBURG – Johnsonburg track and field was honored with a banquet Tuesday night at the Johnsonburg Fire Hall.
Varsity head coach Rene Timm expressed appreciation to the athletes for their hard work this season.
"We want to honor all the wonderful athletes we have here," Timm said. "I just want to thank all of my athletes and all of my junior high athletes for being such wonderful, dedicated young men and women. We truly have such a great team and I also give thanks to all the parents that have raised these wonderful athletes. They deserve all the credit in the world."

Osterhout bypass plans concern residents

Only in the early stages of construction the Osterhout Street bypass in downtown Ridgway has already begun to concern a local resident.
Ridgway resident James Kriegel attended the Ridgway Borough Council meeting seeking answers as to why a 1,500-foot sidewalk was not included in the plans.
"I'm really interested in the Osterhout project because it's the largest construction project in the valley for probably decades," Kriegel said. "I found out after inquiring that it is going to be a one-way street two lanes, but one way.

Breier appreciative in valedictorian speech

Nicole Alicia Breier was the valedictorian of the Ridgway Area High School Class of 2012 and gave an appreciative speech Sunday afternoon at Memorial Field.
"Faculty, family, friends and fellow graduates. Well, here it is. Today's the day. Graduation. It's the day that has been anticipated by all of us until it's actually here," Breier said. "We would have never made it this far without the help of many people. Without them, we would have never made it to this day. We would never be here sitting on this track. They have done so much for us and we need to show our appreciation for them."

Holman: Memorial Day more than a three-day weekend

MT. ZION – "Today, as we approach Memorial Day, we remember and honor those who served our country and are no longer among the living, including Ron Guilyard and all those whose Gold Star families are with us today." With these words, Larry Holman, president of the Pennsylvania State Council of Vietnam Veterans of America, began his address as the main speaker at the Memorial Day ceremony at Mt. Zion Historical Park on Saturday afternoon.

MT. ZION – Members of the Mt. Zion Historical Society, Vietnam Veterans of America Bucktail Chapter 720, and American Legion Post 978 all worked together to fulfill the dream of the late Ronald Guilyard on Saturday, dedicating a memorial at the Mt. Zion Historical Park in honor of the eight soldiers from Elk County who lost their lives during the Vietnam War.
The memorial contains a depiction of the country of Vietnam with the names of four of the deceased soldiers on each side. At the bottom, there is also an inscription explaining Guilyard’s influential role in the project.

ECC seniors recap a myriad of memories

ST. MARYS – As the Elk County Catholic High School Class of 2012 bid farewell to their high school careers on Sunday afternoon, student speakers Valedictorian Jacob Herbstritt and Salutatorian Jena Struble recollected a host of memories shared by the graduates.
Herbstritt's address centered around the need to be prepared, a motto he learned as a Boy Scout throughout his youth. Looking back, he questioned if the graduates' time at ECC has prepared them for what lies ahead.

Elk County Catholic celebrates Class of 2012

ST. MARYS – Elk County Catholic High School honored the accomplishments of the Class of 2012 on Sunday afternoon during the school's 50th commencement exercises.
The 72 members of the senior class gathered Sunday morning for graduation activities, which began with a Baccalaureate Mass and a senior slideshow presentation in the school chapel and were followed by a brunch in the gymnasium.

Area communities pause to reflect on Memorial Day

Members of area communities gathered Monday to recognize Memorial Day while honoring the nation's heroes.
Gathering at the Courthouse gazebo along Main Street in downtown Ridgway, Dr. Michael O'Brien, the superintendent of the Ridgway Area School District, was guest speaker. He shared his thoughts on the special day and also featured a pair of fifth-graders who relayed what freedom meant to them.
