ST. MARYS â€“ The results of a recent fundraiser to benefit families who take their children to the Cleft-Craniofacial Center at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh-UPMC left the planners smiling, and will help bring smiles to more children in western Pennsylvania.
"An Afternoon of Smiles and Sunshine," held on May 20 at The Red Fern in St. Marys, brought in funds to help children with cleft palates and other craniofacial conditions and their families with travel expenses and other associated costs while getting treatment.
Bertha N. Wickett, 80, of St. Marys, died Sunday, July 15, 2012 at Select Specialty Services in Erie.
She was born Oct. 3, 1931, in St. Marys, the daughter of John and Margaret Leightner Brennen. She married Jerome V. Wickett, who predeceased her on Dec. 23, 2010. She resided all of her life in St. Marys. Mrs. Wickett was a member of the Sacred Heart Church. She had been employed at Sylvania for a number of years.
WILCOX â€“Â The Fox Township American Legion baseball team forced a championship game with Wilcox in the Elk County American Legion Baseball League after a 5-2 victory Monday night at Jones Township Community Park.
The deciding game for the league title and a berth in the Region 8 tournament will be at 5:30 p.m. tonight and will again be at Jones Township Community Park.
ST. MARYS â€“ The Pennsylvania State Police Fire Marshal's Unit, St. Marys City Police, and the Crystal Fire Department report conducting an investigation into the origin and cause of a fire that occurred at approximately 4:20 a.m. on Saturday, July 14, 2012, at 137 Lynch Rd. in St. Marys. The fire has been ruled arson.
Just one week after opening its doors, Gallery 219 Antiques at 114 N. Broad St. in downtown Ridgway is already unlike many of the antique shops in the area.
The newly renovated space offers a wide variety of antiques and collectibles ranging from items dating back to the turn of the century to classic Americana from the 1950s.
For store owner and St. Marys resident Stephen Bagley, antiquing or "junking" as he likes to refer to it runs in his blood.
The Fox Township Amerian Legion Post 511 baseball team earned a trip to the Elk County League championship game with a hard-fought 8-6 victory over St. Marys on Saturday night at Berwind Park.
Members of the Ridgway Fire Department and other volunteers are gearing up for the 79th Ridgway Firemen's Carnival scheduled for Monday, July 16 through Saturday, July 21.
The event will be open from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. Monday through Wednesday, and 6 p.m. until midnight from Thursday to Saturday.
Tuesday night will feature the kiddie pet parade; lineup will begin at 5 p.m. on the lower end of Center Street and the parade will start at 6 p.m.
The investigation into a local doctor in response to the death of a patient due to complications caused by medications prescribed her is being led by the Pa. Department of State following her father's continued appeals to state officials for an investigation.
Jim Buehler of Ridgway has spent the last four years pursuing legal action in the July 7, 2008 death of his daughter, Heather Buehler Armanini, whom he claims was prescribed excessive amounts of powerful, habit-forming drugs by a local doctor, including a mixture of oxycodone and acetaminophen.
ST. MARYS â€“ When you talk to people about Michael B. Proudfit, one thing becomes apparent quickly: The young man touched many lives during his brief 19 years. Now, his many friends and family members plan to show their joy at having known him with a special night and a 5K walk/run in his memory.
Works Superintendent Carl Gosnell reported on an inspection conducted by the Department of Environmental Protection [DEP] during Thursday night's Ridgway Township Municipal Authority meeting.
According to Gosnell, the inspection was conducted for a construction permit that was issued for the Boot Jack Pump Station.
"Basically, although the improvements are not completed and won't be completed until the end of September," Gosnell said, "it is the department's [DEP] opinion that we should be conducting the testing as outlined in the draft conditions.
