Virginia Marie Draper

May 15, 2012

Virginia Marie Draper, age 71, of 5441 Whispering Willow Way, Ft. Myers, Fla., died on Wednesday, April 18, 2012 in Florida following a brief illness.
She was born on Nov. 27, 1940 in Bridgeport, Connecticut, and married Jay Draper in August 1962.
They had two children, Donna Mancini of St. Augustine, Fla., and Jeffrey D. Draper, who preceded her in death on Jan. 17, 2008 in Pittsburgh. She had two grandsons whom she adored.

Ridgway baseball recognized with banquet

Ridgway baseball recognized the team with a banquet Monday at Sandy Beach Recreational Park after the Elkers' game with St. Marys.
Ridgway varsity baseball head coach Mark Morelli recognized seniors Ryan McClelland and Jay Launer for their efforts with the team.
"We appreciate everything you've done," Morelli said. "We certainly wish you well in your future plans."
JoJo Jaques was the winner of the scholar-athlete award.
"A lot of schools look at people and their grades," Morelli said. "You got to keep your grades up."

Ridgway Prom Court announced

The Ridgway Area School District recently announced the 2012 Prom Court. Members includee:
Logan Feronti
Logan is the daughter of Joel and Donna Feronti. Her activities include: Model UN, Mock Trial, Science Olympiad, Show Choir, District and Regional Choir, School Musicals, Marching Band, Student Council, Class Officer, and National Honor Society. Logan plans to attend college to pursue a career in musical theatre.

Marusiak covers easements during Elk County Gas Task Force meeting

Matt Marusiak of Western Pennsylvania Conservancy gave a special presentation on source water protection and conservation easements at Monday's meeting of the Elk County Gas Task Force.
Marusiak, a land protection specialist for the conservancy, has an office in Ridgway and a territory that covers the entire 12-county region of the PA Wilds. He has a degree in petrochemical engineering and has worked on the North Central Pennsylvania Regional Planning and Development Commission and for the planning department of Elk County.

Johnsonburg Fire Department cuts ambulance services

JOHNSONBURG – The Johnsonburg Borough Council will have to choose who will provide QRS [quick response services] services to residents of the Borough of Johnsonburg and north Ridgway Township following a suggestion from council member Duane Duffy to extricate the Johnsonburg Fire Department from providing the service.
Duffy's suggestion proceeded a letter from the fire department stating that they will cease to provide basic life support [BLS] and ambulance transport services to be effective 11:59 p.m. on June 30.

Detwiler earns prestigious PIMA honor

Tom Detwiler, Vice-President/General Manager of the Domtar-Johnsonburg Papermill, has been named the Mill Manager-of-the-Year by the Paper Industry Management Association (PIMA). Tom received this prestigious honor on April 25 at the PaperCon 2012 conference held in New Orleans, and accepted the award in front of fellow mill managers from across the country.
As recognition of his award, Tom received the high honor on April 27 when his service to the mill and community was officially noted by United States Congressman Glenn Thompson (PA-5).

Dr. Jerome W. Poulliott Jr.

Dr. Jerome W. Poulliott Jr., 82, of 560 Church St., St. Marys, died on Sunday, May 13, 2012 at Hamot Medical Center in Erie.
He was born Sept. 10, 1929 in Williamsport, a son of the late Jerome W. and Sarah Catherine Fague Poulliott.
On June 29, 1957 in Philadelphia, he married Kathleen Kearney Poulliott, who survives.

Mike J. Rainelli

Mike J. Rainelli, 86, of the Gosser Hill area of Allegheny Township, died Friday, May 11, 2012 at 9:30 a.m. in the VNA Inpatient Hospice Unit in Butler Township.
He was born March 7, 1926 in Conemaugh Township, son of the late Joseph and Annie (Manifest) Rainelli.

Elkers fall to St. Marys

St. Marys Baseball scored in four of the six innings played in a 10-0, 6-inning win over Ridgway Monday afternoon at Sandy Beach Recreational Park.
St. Marys was off to a fast start as Mitchell Meyer hit a home run to left with the first at bat of the game to put the Dutch up 1-0. Dalton Kline walked and Branden Tyger doubled to right field to score Kline for a 2-0 St. Marys lead. Brandon Vollmer then walked, stole second and scored on a Ridgway infield error on a ball hit by Justin Beimel to put the Dutch ahead 3-0 with no one out.

Rosella F. "Rosie" Marconi

Rosella F. “Rosie” Marconi, 83, formerly of Hemlock Avenue, Kane, died early Saturday evening, May 12, 2012 at The Lutheran Home at Kane.
Born Jan. 28, 1929 in Kane, she was the daughter of Leonard and Mary Loretta “Laura” Dalton Fiscus. On May 27, 1950 in Kane, she married James J. Marconi, who survives.
After graduating from Kane Area High School in 1946, Rosie owned and operated the Mary Rose Beauty Shop in Kane. Later, she worked at Houston Electronics, then for Stackpole, both in Kane, where she was a packer and a union steward.
