Elk County was spared the brunt of "Superstorm Sandy" while coastal New Jersey and Long Island were rocked by the violent weather.
Despite a high age average amongst active members, Ridgway Fire Chief John Wygant was happy to report recently that the volunteer fire company has picked up some new members.

With Hurricane Sandy bearing down on the eastern seaboard, and the storm system working its way across Pennsylvania, local residents began stocking up on emergency provisions as a precaution in the event of flooding and power outages.
The weather cooperated Saturday afternoon for the annual Halloween parade put on by the Ridgway Lions Club. Led by the lion and the Ridgway Area High School Marching Band, paraders dressed up in their unique Halloween costumes and strolled down Center Street. The parade route went from the Courthouse Annex on Center Street, took a right turn onto South Mill Avenue, took another right turn onto Main Street, then proceeded onto Court Street for the end of the route. Attendees then enjoyed hot dogs and beverages as the lower portion of Court Street was shut down for a short time.
David A. Benson Sr., 71, of 482 Silver Creek Rd., Johnsonburg, died on Sunday, Oct. 28, 2012 at his residence following a brief illness.
He was born on Dec. 17, 1940 in Johnsonburg, son to the late Arthur and Louise Polinski Benson.
On Aug. 2, 1963 he married Julia Kasmierski, who survives.
He was a lifelong resident of Johnsonburg, having graduated from the Johnsonburg High School in 1958. He was employed by PennTech Papers in Johnsonburg for 40 years before retiring in 1998.
He was also a member of the St. John Lutheran Church in Johnsonburg.
The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection [DEP] reported that a sample collected from Daguscahonda's public water system shows that E. coli bacteria is present in levels above Pennsylvania Safe Drinking Water Act standards.

Floyd D. Beale, 89,Â died at 11:10Â a.m. on Friday, Oct. 26, 2012 at Sena Kean Manor in Smethport.Â
Floyd was born on Feb. 19, 1923 on the Harbison Farm in Buffalo Township, Butler County.Â He was the son of the lateÂ Ralph Edward Beale and Ethel Jane (Walters) Beale. He was the widower of Phyllis June (Brothers) Beale,Â who died in 1992. Floyd and PhyllisÂ married on Nov. 19, 1947 in theÂ Freeport Gospel Tabernacle in Freeport.
Multiple emergency responders were called out Thursday evening for a one-vehicle accident off Montmorenci Road in Ridgway Township.
