Junior varsity Johnsonburg Ramette basketball celebrates season with banquet

JOHNSONBURG – The Johnsonburg Ramettes junior varsity team was honored with a banquet Monday night at Johnsonburg Area High School.
The team finished the season with a 17-5 record with three of those losses coming to Elk County Catholic. The other two losses were to St. Marys and Cameron County.
“I’m proud of them, 17-5 is pretty good,” Johnsonburg junior varsity coach Melissa Myers said. “We beat Brockway and going into it, they had no idea Brockway was undefeated.”

New 911 Center answers the call

A journey that took more than two decades to trek finally came full circle Monday afternoon with a ceremonial ribbon-cutting at the county's new 911 Center.
The building, formerly the Industrial Technical Education Center [ITEC], is located behind the North Central Pennsylvania Regional Planning and Development Commission, and Ridgmont Assisted Living Facility along Montmorenci Road.

Anticipation rises as Chinese restaurant nears completion

March 19, 2012 marked the one-year anniversary of the fire that devastated the streets of Ridgway. Now the long awaited completion of the Chinese Restaurant is finally coming to a close.
“The Aiello building is just about completed,” said Michelle Bogacki, Main Street Manager, during the March regular meeting of the Ridgway Borough Council held Monday. “The Chinese Restaurant should be opening any day.”
Ridgway Mayor Dr. Guillermo Udarbe added the final inspection was held on Monday, and the grand opening is slated for the end of March.

John George Hetrick

John George Hetrick, 85, of Caledonia, died Monday, March 19, 2012 at Christ the King Manor of DuBois.
He was born May 8, 1926 in Caledonia, son of the late Russell J. and Hilda L. (Johnson) Hetrick. He married Kathleen Wonderling, who predeceased him on Feb. 27, 2004.

Mary E. Johnson, 94, of Hickory Street, Ridgway, died on Sunday, March 18, 2012 at Elk Haven Nursing Home.
She was born February 16, 1918, in Cuneo, the daughter of the late Perry D. and Bertha Riley Clark. She married Arthur J. Johnson, who predeceased her on April 18, 1992. Mrs. Johnson had resided most of her life in Ridgway. She was a devoted, long-time member of the Ridgway Church of Christ. During the Korean Conflict, Mary worked at Stackpole Carbon Company, but the majority of her life was devoted to her family, whom she enjoyed very much. Her family will miss her dearly.

Margaret Wood Stephenson

Margaret Wood Stephenson, age 87, of Seven Fields, went to be with the Lord Feb. 24, 2012.
Born in Ridgway on Oct. 7, 1924, Marge as she was known to many was the daughter of the late Lucille and General Herford M. Wood. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 52 years, Earle W., on Aug. 22, 2001.

Kemmer settles in as commissioner

After an upset victory by less than 100 votes to unseat incumbent Ron Beimel, newly-elected Elk County Commissioner Janis E. Kemmer is settling in as one of the county's three commissioners.
"I've always believed in good government and I just thought that perhaps I could make a difference," Janis said, "not that it was bad, but I'm getting to the point where I'm ready to give something back to the community."

Daffodil Days convey symbol of hope for cancer patients

Daffodils will be springing up throughout Elk County beginning Tuesday, which marks the start of the American Cancer Society's Daffodil Days event.

Alice A. Ginther, 91, of 1767 Bucktail Rd., St. Marys, died on Friday, March 16, 2012 at Pinecrest Manor following a lengthy illness.
She was born Nov. 27, 1920 in Truman, a daughter of the late George and Anna Bates Filling.
On Oct. 28, 1944 in First United Methodist Church, she married Urban Ginther, who survives.
Alice graduated from Emporium High School and was a member of the First United Methodist Church. She greatly enjoyed fishing and picnicking in Hicks Run. She also enjoyed crocheting and crossword puzzles. Most of all, she enjoyed spending time with her family.

John D. Golebieski

John D. Golebieski, 69, of 313 First Ave., Johnsonburg, died on Saturday afternoon, March 17, 2012 at DuBois Regional Medical Center in DuBois.
He was born March 1, 1943 in Johnsonburg, son of the late Bronislaw and Anna Simchick Golebieski.
He married Roseanne Parisi on May 21, 1966 in Force. She survives.
Mr. Golebieski resided in Johnsonburg most of his life, since 1975, but he lived briefly in Raleigh, N.C. and in Erie.
He graduated from Holy Rosary School and from Johnsonburg High School, Class of 1961.
