Playground coming to Johnsonburg in 2015

JOHNSONBURG – Through a 'Blight to Flight' project by a team from Leadership Elk County, the Knothole Recreational Park in Johnsonburg is expected to receive new playground equipment in the spring of 2015.
The project started after Leadership Elk County assigned Donna Costanzo, Sarah Grunthaner, George Hasselman and Katie Herzing to a group, tasking them with finding a sustainable and beneficial project to do within an Elk County town.

James M. Hoyt

James M. Hoyt, 73, of 39738 State St. in Ridgway, died Saturday morning, Jan. 17, 2015 at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh following a brief illness.
He was born July 30, 1941 in Jamestown, N.Y., son of the late John J. and Margaret (Taraska) Hoyt Sekelsky.
He married Beverly J. Pontious on June 19, 1965.
He had resided in Ridgway for the last 50 years, and he was a member of the St. Leo Catholic Church and a past K of C member.
Jim enjoyed hunting, fishing, bowling, playing cards and polka music.
He had served in the U.S. Navy, and he was a peacetime veteran.

Kimberly Ann Spicer

Kimberly Ann Spicer, 45, of Marienville, died unexpectedly Saturday, Jan. 17, 2015 at UPMC Hamot.
She was born July 8, 1969, in Erie. On June 24, 1989, in Kane, Andy Spicer and Kimberly wed. She was the daughter of  Robert and Lavina Curtis Carlson of Kane.
Kimberly was a medical assistant for the Warren Medical Group. She was a member of the Word of Grace Full Gospel Fellowship Church in Tionesta.

Bradford man charged with murder in shooting death of his son-in-law

BRADFORD – A Bradford businessman is charged with murder in the shooting death of his son-in-law.
Stephen Daniel Stidd, 62, of 725 E. Main St., Bradford, is accused of criminal homicide in the death of Melvin Daniel Bizzarro, 43.
According to the criminal complaint filed with Bradford District Court Judge Dom Cercone, Stidd shot Bizzarro about 9:30 a.m. Friday behind Togi’s Restaurant at 412 E. Main St., Bradford.

Bradford man charged in motorcycle crash

BENEZETTE – A Bradford man faces criminal charges in a May 31, 2014 one-vehicle motorcycle crash, which resulted in major injuries to Ashley J. Beckwith of Bradford.
Daniel S. Hushon, 41, is charged with a felony count of aggravated assault by motor vehicle, a misdemeanor count of recklessly endangering another person, as well as summary offenses of driving a vehicle at an unsafe speed and reckless driving.

Plans to remove memorial now on hold

A makeshift memorial shrine may soon be removed according to initial plans by Ridgway Borough officials.
The memorial-- a handmade wooden cross and artificial flowers-- rests in front of a fence at a small park located at the corner of North Broad Street and Eagle street in Ridgway. The tribute is for Brian Holterback who died July 13.

At press time, television reports indicated borough officials were allowing the shrine to stay although those reports could not be confirmed at press time.

Ridgway Elkers edge Johnsonburg in overtime

JOHNSONBURG – The Johnsonburg Rams appeared to be on the brink of an upset after three quarters Friday night.
After the fourth quarter and overtime, the Rams walked off the court just upset after a loss.
Ridgway overcame a nine-point second half deficit to take a 38-29 overtime victory over the Rams at Johnsonburg Area High School.
Johnsonburg scored just five combined points in the fourth quarter and overtime. The Rams finished the game with 17 turnovers.

Comeback bid falls short as Ramettes top Ridgway

Johnsonburg took advantage of turnovers and poor shooting in the second quarter and down the stretch Friday against Ridgway and held on in a raucous second half for a 38-32 win.
Senior Ashley Imbrogno paced the Ramettes with 16 points, including a halftime buzzer-beater of at least 50 feet, and 12 rebounds while Nicole Myers and Brianna Quiggle had seven points each.
The Lady Elkers had two players in double figures with Jessica Kifer (11 points) and Hannah Park (10 points) but were unable to overcome a lackluster second quarter and cold shooting in the last few minutes of the game.

Mission trip includes county commissioner

That's one of the key points for Elk County Commissioner Jan Kemmer, who along with other members of the local community are preparing for a mission trip to the Dominican Republic.

Johnsonburg purchases new fire truck

JOHNSONBURG – Designated Engine Rescue 231, a new fire truck was delivered to the Johnsonburg Volunteer Fire Department on Thursday.
The new truck, which cost the department approximately $462,000, made its way from a factory in Ebensburg to Johnsonburg Thursday, giving the Johnsonburg Volunteer Fire Department six firefighting vehicles within its fleet.
