Additional $200K secured for recycling center

The Elk County Solid Waste Authority continues to make progress towards opening a new recycling center in St. Marys as the organization has received a $200,000 commitment from the Stackpole-Hall Foundation.
The authority has set a goal of $2 million for the project, and currently, the authority has raised $300,000, which consists of a $200,000 commitment from the Stackpole-Hall Foundation and a $100,000 commitment from the Elk County Solid Waste Authority.

M. Elaine Geyer, 84, of 513 Olson St., Ridgway, died Wednesday evening, Feb. 18, 2015 at Penn Highlands Elk following a brief illness.
She was born Nov. 15, 1930 in Kane, daughter of the late Carl and Mary (Weidert) Anderson. She married Rich Polinski in June of 1950 and he preceded her in death in June of 1968. She then married Cliff Geyer in May of 1978 and he preceded her in death in March of 2002.
She had resided in Ridgway for the last 37 years and was a former Wilcox resident.
She was a member of St. Leo Catholic Church. Elaine was a graduate of the Wilcox High School.

Gloria M. Chileski

Gloria M. Chileski, 72, of 309 Jackson Ave., Ridgway, died unexpectedly early Thursday morning, Feb. 19, 2015 at Penn Highlands Elk in St. Marys.
She was born Feb. 25, 1942 in Ridgway, daughter of the late Domenic and Josephine (Testa) Sorge.
She married Alan S. Chileski on April 20, 1963, and he survives.

Ridgway varsity girls basketball honored with banquet

The Ridgway varsity girls basketball team was honored with a banquet Thursday evening at Aiello Cafe in Ridgway.
Ridgway varsity head coach Stacy Kifer introduced the players and handed out awards.
Rachel Foringer was the scholar-athlete award winner.
“Rachel really improved in many aspects this season,” coach Kifer said. “She was a key girl to help us out on defense this year. She is a hustler and gives all she has on the court.”

Ridgway JV Lady Elkers honored with banquet

The Ridgway junior varisty girls basketball team was honored with a banquet Thursday night at Aiello Cafe in Ridgway.
Junior varsity head coach Dina Fullem introduced all of the girls and handed out awards. Tonya Harlan was the scholar-athlete award winner.
“Tonya contributed to the team this year with her hustle on defense,” coach Fullem said. “She forced her opponents to make turnovers and she had many deflections on defense. She always gives 100 percent on the court.”

Bluewater plant in St. Marys earns award

ST. MARYS – The Bluewater Thermal Solutions facility in St. Marys on Wednesday was the recipient of a Best Overall Performance award from its parent company.
The St. Marys facility was one of four winning facilities from Bluewater Thermal Solutions' network of 12 facilities within the United States and Canada.
The St. Marys facility was selected as the winner of the Best Overall Performance award at Bluewater Thermal Solutions, being selected as the winner from a pool of 12 facilities owned by Bluewater.

DA: Prior record score is key in sentencing criminals

Though every crime has an offense gravity score based on the severity of the crime, the major influence in sentencing is often the defendant's prior record score, said District Attorney Shawn T. McMahon.
"The court doesn't necessarily need to follow the guidelines," McMahon said. "Part of what goes through my mind is community safety. That thought is always on my mind. I've got to balance efficiency with effectiveness."

Rose Marie Rutigliano

Rose Marie Rutigliano, 88, formerly of 801 West Ninth St., Del Rio, Texas, died peacefully Friday afternoon, Feb. 13, 2015. She died at the home of her daughter Becky Bradley in Hollister, Fla. Rose was born April 10, 1926 to the late Amelia and Carl Lindberg.
She married Chester P. Rutigliano on April 19, 1947. They had been married 66 years. Chester died March 30, 2014.
Rose resided in Ridgway with her husband until moving to Texas in 1961 and settling in Del Rio. They resided there until their passing.

County on board with exploring rail authority

North Central Pennsylvania Regional Planning and Development Commission officials in early November 2014 were approached regarding the possibility of revitalizing nearly 20 miles of railroad between Curwensville and DuBois.
The project would connect RJ Corman's railroads to the Buffalo & Pittsburgh railroad and has been lauded as significant economic development that could open up the region to additional markets.
Elk County commissioners are onboard with the project, authorizing the exploration of organizing a regional rail authority.

Twp. supervisors discuss Main St. Program

Main Street Manager Michelle Bogacki attended Tuesday's Ridgway Township Supervisors meeting to discuss the benefits the program has recently had in the area, specifically focusing on successes in the school district.
Bogacki first talked to the board about the DISCOVER Partnership and the Challenge To Change project that has come out of that partnership.
She said the DISCOVER Partnership was a grant received by the Community Education Council, and through that grant, the Challenge To Change project was started.
