Norma Jean Fields

Norma Jean Fields, 84, of Route 219, Brockport, died Saturday, Feb. 21, 2015 at Penn Highlands DuBois.
Born Oct. 9, 1930 in Tonawanda, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late Perry E. and Mary L. Provin Britton.
She was married to Horace A. “Gabby” Fields and he preceded her in death March 4, 2004.
Retired, she had been employed at St. Marys Powdered Metal Products for 25 years, and was a homemaker.
Norma was a member at the Moorhead United Methodist Church in Brockway. She enjoyed watching TV, especially soap operas and "The Big Bang Theory" as well as working crossword puzzles.

Six area wrestlers advance to regionals

CLARION – It was a successful weekend for area wrestlers as a total of six area grapplers will be going to the PIAA Northwest Regional Championship at the conclusion of the District 9 Class AA Individual Wrestling Championships Saturday at Clarion University.
For Ridgway, Bryce Barclay (106), Drew Baumgratz (120), Logen McClain (126), Ryan Geyer (195) and Troy Quail (220) qualified. Johnsonburg's Jake Zimmerman qualified at 132 pounds.

'Step in the right direction' for blue water vets

In what Elk County Veterans Affairs Director Leslie Neal calls a "step in the right direction," the United States Department of Veterans Affairs has now included non-Hodgkin's lymphoma as a presumptive illness for blue water veterans serving during the Vietnam War.
The VA assumes that certain diseases can be related to a veteran’s qualifying military service, called "presumptive diseases."

Ridgway Elkers fall in D-9 quarterfinals to Venango Catholic

BROOKVILLE – There was no mincing words on who Ridgway boys basketball coach Anthony Allegretto thought was the better team Friday night.
Ridgway lost 52-45 to Venango Catholic in the District 9 boys basketball Class A quarterfinals held Friday night at Brookville High School.

Additional $200K secured for recycling center

The Elk County Solid Waste Authority continues to make progress towards opening a new recycling center in St. Marys as the organization has received a $200,000 commitment from the Stackpole-Hall Foundation.
The authority has set a goal of $2 million for the project, and currently, the authority has raised $300,000, which consists of a $200,000 commitment from the Stackpole-Hall Foundation and a $100,000 commitment from the Elk County Solid Waste Authority.

M. Elaine Geyer, 84, of 513 Olson St., Ridgway, died Wednesday evening, Feb. 18, 2015 at Penn Highlands Elk following a brief illness.
She was born Nov. 15, 1930 in Kane, daughter of the late Carl and Mary (Weidert) Anderson. She married Rich Polinski in June of 1950 and he preceded her in death in June of 1968. She then married Cliff Geyer in May of 1978 and he preceded her in death in March of 2002.
She had resided in Ridgway for the last 37 years and was a former Wilcox resident.
She was a member of St. Leo Catholic Church. Elaine was a graduate of the Wilcox High School.

Gloria M. Chileski

Gloria M. Chileski, 72, of 309 Jackson Ave., Ridgway, died unexpectedly early Thursday morning, Feb. 19, 2015 at Penn Highlands Elk in St. Marys.
She was born Feb. 25, 1942 in Ridgway, daughter of the late Domenic and Josephine (Testa) Sorge.
She married Alan S. Chileski on April 20, 1963, and he survives.

Ridgway varsity girls basketball honored with banquet

The Ridgway varsity girls basketball team was honored with a banquet Thursday evening at Aiello Cafe in Ridgway.
Ridgway varsity head coach Stacy Kifer introduced the players and handed out awards.
Rachel Foringer was the scholar-athlete award winner.
“Rachel really improved in many aspects this season,” coach Kifer said. “She was a key girl to help us out on defense this year. She is a hustler and gives all she has on the court.”

Ridgway JV Lady Elkers honored with banquet

The Ridgway junior varisty girls basketball team was honored with a banquet Thursday night at Aiello Cafe in Ridgway.
Junior varsity head coach Dina Fullem introduced all of the girls and handed out awards. Tonya Harlan was the scholar-athlete award winner.
“Tonya contributed to the team this year with her hustle on defense,” coach Fullem said. “She forced her opponents to make turnovers and she had many deflections on defense. She always gives 100 percent on the court.”
