Municipal Authority purchases dump truck

JOHNSONBURG – The Johnsonburg Municipal Authority [JMA] voted unanimously in favor of purchasing a new dump truck during Tuesday night's regular meeting.
Manager Lisa Sorg presented quotes for three trucks. Officials decided on a 2012 Ford F-550 Regular Cab 4x4 from Murray Ford. The total cost of the truck after the trade-in and up-fitting price is $47,277.96.
The Authority received $28,094 for the trade-in of their eight-year-old truck.
Official Ed Gapinski said the old truck has been "nothing but heartache" since its purchase.

Edith P. Zambanini

Edith P. Zambanini, 103, of Ridgway, passed away Tuesday, April 17, 2012, at Elk Haven Nursing Home, surrounded by her loving family.
She was born Oct. 11, 1908, in Byrnedale, the daughter of the late Arthur and Angeline Ronca Busatto. On July 5, 1925, she married Senatore Zambanini, he predeceased her in 1980. She was a member of St. Leo’s Catholic Church. She loved spending time with her family and enjoyed playing cards, bingo and going to the casino.

Eugene R. "Herbie" Tassone

Eugene R. "Herbie" Tassone, 86, of 526 Penn St., Johnsonburg, died Wednesday, April 18, 2012 at Elk Regional Health Center in St. Marys following a lengthy illness.
He was born on Aug. 16, 1925 in Johnsonburg, son of the late Salvatore "Sam" and Ellen Vavala Tassone. On April 26, 1952, in Holy Rosary Church in Johnsonburg, he married Agnes Gapinski, who survives.
He resided in Johnsonburg all his life and was a 1944 graduate of Johnsonburg High School. He was a member of the Holy Rosary Church, Holy Name Society, Johnsonburg Senior Center, and the Knights of Columbus.

Thomas M. Grumley Sr.

Thomas M. Grumley Sr., 91, of 204 Jefferson Ave., Ridgway, passed away Tuesday, April 17, 2012 at 12 noon at Elk Regional Health Center.
He was born Aug. 10, 1920, in Johnsonburg, the son of John and Elizabeth Miller Grumley. On July 26, 1947, he married Geraldine “Jerry” M. Nelson, she survives. Mr. Grumley had been a Ridgway resident since 1957. He was a member of St. Leo’s Catholic Church, the American Legion, a longtime member of the Johnsonburg Sportsmen’s Club and a life member of the Johnsonburg V.F.W. Grumley-Tucci-Pavlina Post 6301.

New Marcellus forum suggested

Elk County Commissioners discussed the possibility of a new kind of public issue forum regarding Marcellus Shale.
Mike Kamandulis, a member of Elk County C.A.R.E.S. [Citizens Advocating Responsible Environmental Stewardship], reviewed his experiences attending A forum entitled "The Marcellus Shale - What Does It Mean For Us," hosted Saturday, April 14, at the Central Pa. Institute of Science and Technology in Pleasant Gap, Centre County.

Ronald C. Ecklund

Ronald C. Ecklund, 73, of 668 Washington Rd., St. Marys, died Tuesday morning, April 17, 2012, at Elk Regional Health Center following a lengthy illness.
He was born Feb. 3, 1939 in Ridgway, son of the late Charles M. and Martha L. (Fischer) Ecklund. On Nov. 11, 1983, he married Ann Werner Ecklund, who survives.

Robert M. Zurfluh

Robert M. Zurfluh, age 90, of 501 Upper Front St., Ridgway, died Monday evening, April 16, 2012, at Pinecrest Manor following a brief illness.
He was born Sept. 30, 1921 in Ridgway, son of the late Peter and Anna M. (Miller) Zurfluh. He had resided in Ridgway for many years and was a former Hartford, Conn. resident for 35 years.
He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church where he was an active member, a past board member of the Ridgway Public Library, and a member of the Joey's Bakery coffee clutch. Bob always had a joke to tell and brought out the best in everyone.

Ridgway softball edged by Lady Cardinals, 5-3

Ridgway softball lost 5-3 to DuBois Central Catholic Tuesday afternoon at Francis S. Grandinetti Elementary School.
DuBois Central Catholic scored the first runs of the game in the third inning. Lauresa Gulvas reached on an infield error and then stole second base. Kylee Schaffer would single home Gulvas for the game’s first run. Tricia Varacallo then singled and Kaitlyn Yebernetsky would triple to plate Varacallo for a 2-0 lead. Alyssa Marchioni singled to score Yebernetsky for a 3-0 DCC lead.

Crusaders baseball defeats Kane Wolves, 13-7

The Elk County Catholic Crusader baseball team withstood a four-run first inning by the Kane Wolves Tuesday afternoon at Berwind Park as they rebounded for a 13-7 victory over the Wolves.
Kane jumped out to the 4-0 lead after the top of the first inning. Elk Catholic responded with three runs of their own in the home half of the inning. The Crusaders would score four in the second, five in the third and one in the fourth for a 13-4 lead. Kane scored two in the fifth and one in the seventh, making the final score 13-7.

Curwensville uses the long ball to drop Ramettes

JOHNSONBURG – Megan Barrett and Tiffany Carter both had a 5-RBI performance Tuesday as Curwensville defeated Johnsonburg, 17-1.
Curwensville's Tierra Shope scattered three hits in three innings of work, giving up one run while Taylor Goodman and Carter both hit home runs over the fence in the three-inning victory.
Curwensville put four runs up in the first inning to take the early advantage as the Lady Tide sent nine batters to the plate in the first and second innings, and another 14 batters in the third inning.
