RIDGWAY â€” Ridgway cross country hosted the annual Ridgway Invitational Saturday morning at Francis S. Grandinetti Elementary School.
A new meet record was shattered in the girls varsity race as Regan Rome of Dallas finished with a time of 18:15, breaking the old record of 19:03 which was set by Dani Kocjancic of Kane in 2008. Kennedy Weisner of Elk County Catholic also would have broken the old meet record with her runner-up finish at 18:41.
Adair Gennocro of St. Marys was third at 19:04 and Victoria Dippold took fourth for ECC with a time of 19:37.
JOHNSONBURG â€“ Johnsonburg football fans have been waiting two years to see a Ram football win at home.
The Rams delivered Friday night against an oldtime rival.
Johnsonburg held off a late Ridgway drive for a 13-12 victory Friday at Memorial Field in Johnsonburg.
After 108 meetings between the two teams, the series is tied 50-50-8.
"It feels great," Johnsonburg coach Jesse Schreiber said. "It's for the kids, they played extremely well. It's huge, it's a rivalry game. It doesn't matter what our record is. It's a rivalry game and it's big."
The Ridgway Main Street Program and Ridgway-Elk County Chamber of Commerce are teaming up once again to bring you this year's Flavors of Fall Festival to be held on Saturday, Oct. 13 in downtown Ridgway.
Main Street Manager Michelle Bogacki said this year's festival will feature hay-rides beginning at the Welcome Center; wood carvings, bake sales, vendors on the courthouse lawn, crafts foods, kettle corn and much more.
Music will be provided by JB Unplugged in the Courthouse Gazebo from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The Good Samaritan Food Bank of Ridgway is in desperate need of food and volunteers.
The food bank located behind the Ridgway BiLo in the basement of the Knights of Columbus building has been serving the community for over 30 years.
According to volunteer Jean Gier, the food bank feeds between 100 and 150 families each month.
Elizabeth M. (Betty) Gausman, 90, died Thursday evening, Oct. 4, 2012 at Highland View Nursing Home in Brockway, following an illness of the past nine months.
She was born July 15, 1922 in Carman, daughter of the late Joseph P. and Mary F. Oresko Griech.
ERIE - A St. Marys woman charged with embezzling nearly a million dollars from her employer entered a guilty plea to charges of mail fraud and tax evasion on Friday before a U.S. District Court Judge in Erie.
It is alleged that Sandra Ann Prechtel, 49, of St. Marys, embezzled funds while in the employ of Abbott Furnace Company in St. Marys.
Most caterpillars are harmless, but there is one specimen that area residents should take care to avoid.
The white hickory Tussock moth caterpillar (identification for the photo above was confirmed by McKean County Cooperative Extension and an entomologist at Penn State), the black-and-white insect is native to parts of Canada and the northeastern and south central United States and appears in early summer to fall.
ST. MARYS â€“ Now in its 11th year, the annual K-9 Karnival Walk 'n Wag, sponsored by the Elk County Humane Society, is taking place this afternoon at Benzinger Park in St. Marys.
Canines of all kinds are invited to participate, with registration from 11-11:45 a.m. and the walk around the park beginning promptly at noon. All participants will receive a goodie bag with gifts for both themselves and their dog.
ST. MARYS - The driver of a vehicle involved in a fatal crash that occurred on July 11 at 3:45 a.m. on SR 255 in Byrnedale has been charged with the death of his passenger, 23-year-old Savannah O. Straub, 23, of St. Marys.
