Piano and voice instructor offering more than lessons

WILCOX – Tracie Pretak, owner of Grace Notes Studio in Wilcox, teaches piano and voice lessons to students ranging from five to adult.
Pretak held a Pro Concert Series to showcase the talents of Kathryn Polaski, Bailey Pretak and herself. Pretak developed the series so Polaski could become adept at performing difficult pieces in front of a crowd.
“I want to develop Kathryn’s talent as much as possible because I believe she will do something with music in the future,” Pretak said. “Kathryn was born to do this. The only thing standing in the way of a career is herself.”

Crusaders edged by Clarion 22-20 in D9 playoffs

CLARION – The Elk County Catholic Crusader football squad saw their season come to an end on Friday evening as the team fell to the Clarion Bobcats 22-20 in the opening round of the Class A District 9 playoffs. The Crusaders dominated the first half of the game, leading 20-0 at halftime before allowing the Bobcats to score 22 unanswered points during their second-half rally.

Bus routes concern parents

JOHNSONBURG – The recent change to the bus routes at the Johnsonburg Area School District continues to alarm parents.
Several concerned parents attended Thursday night's Board of Director's meeting voicing their concern.
Concerned parent Diane Jundzilo of Johnsonburg asked the board if there has been any recent changes made since October's meeting.
"Have you done anything in regards to changing the routes," asked Jundzilo. "Just because there is not a pile of parents here does not mean they do not know what's going on."

Lloyd B. Gray Sr.

Lloyd B. Gray Sr., age 81, of Jefferson Street, Byrnedale, died Friday, Nov. 11, 2011 at the DuBois Nursing Home after a lengthy illness.
He was born Sept. 11, 1930 in Sheffield, son of Lloyd Byron “Chizzy” Gray and Jane (Wilt) Gray, deceased.
A graduate of Bennett’s Valley High School, Class of 1950, he served in the U.S. Navy from 1952 to 1959 attaining the Rank of First Class Ship Fitter. He had visited 31 foreign Ports in his Navy career aboard the USS Bristol and the USS Yellowstone.

A Veteran family

Students, faculty, government officials, friends and veterans got to see a different side of Dr. Michael O'Brien, Ridgway's first-year superintendent, Thursday morning during a Veterans Day ceremony.
O'Brien, a veteran of the United States Air Force, was humbled by the chance to speak Thursday as he spoke of the importance of being a veteran and just how exclusive that club is.

Veterans Day exhibit opens today

The Veterans Day exhibit's grand opening is today, with the showcase running through Dec. 2 at the Elk County Historical Society's Robinson Museum along Center Street in Ridgway.
For Mary Kalinowski, executive director of the Elk County Historical Society, the exhibit was a way to recognize the area's veterans and display local memorabilia.

Johnsonburg students pay homage to veterans

JOHNSONBURG – The Johnsonburg Area School District held a special assembly Thursday morning in the high school auditorium to recognize their veterans.
"We gather to honor our veterans who served our country each and every day," said superintendent Dennis Crotzer. "I acknowledge their willingness to serve so we can enjoy freedom. The sacrifices they have made in their service is greatly appreciated."
The special guests were recognized following the Pledge of Allegiance and playing of the National Anthem by the high school band.

Jesse P. DeVittorio, 84, of 11 South Broad St., Ridgway, died Wednesday, Nov. 9, 2011 at his residence.
He was born May 23, 1927, in Ridgway, the son of the late Dominic and Josephine Monago DeVittorio.
Mr. DeVittorio was a member of St. Leo's Catholic Church and the Ridgway Knights of Columbus. He was a graduate of St. Leo's High School and he was a regular at Joey’s Bakery Breakfast Club.

Crusaders honor fall sports teams

Elk County Catholic High School held its annual Fall Athletic Awards program on Wednesday evening in the high school auditorium to honor the school's numerous fall sports athletes.
According to Athletic Director Aaron Straub, 189 of the 272 students in grades 9-12 at ECC participated in a fall sport this year. Along with this, there were also numerous 7th and 8th grade students from the St. Marys Catholic Middle School who also contributed to the success of the school's sports teams this fall.

Lions club continuously involved in community

Since its beginning in 1950, the Ridgway Lions Club has been actively involved in supporting its community. B.H. Robb, a member of the Clearfield Lions Club and District Zone Chairman, initially pursued the possibility of organizing a Ridgway charter. On April 27, 1950, the charter was successfully intact. Since then, the club has been pursuing many avenues of community support.
A current event the club produces is an annual magic show. John Charleson, Chairman and member for more than 20 years, says this is a major fundraiser.
