RATA refuses board's contract offer

The Ridgway Area School District's school board held a special meeting Tuesday, and going into the meeting, the only item on the agenda was the Ridgway Area Teachers Association's contract.
The teachers association has voted not to accept the recent offer from the school board, stating that the proposal "contained information [they] had never seen or discussed," according to a statement released by RATA.

October's electronics recycling helps CAPSEA

The Elk County Recycling Center, Orro Fundraising and CAPSEA are teaming up throughout the month of October to kickstart a fundraiser to support CAPSEA's ongoing flood relief.
CAPSEA was one of many local businesses that sustained substantial damage during the flood that soaked the area on May 21.

Route 219 project to impact Ridgway traffic

Work on some sections of Route 219 in Ridgway will affect area drivers Thursday, Sept. 25 and Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 29 and 30.
On Thursday, crews will mill Route 219 from the bottom of Boot Jack Hill to Baker Alley and from the Central Fire Hall to Erie Avenue. On Monday and Tuesday, those same sections will be paved. Motorists using Route 219 in the Ridgway area will encounter travel delays and will need to be alert for flaggers in the roadway.

Lady Crusaders defeat Johnsonburg Ramettes, 3-0

ST. MARYS – The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusader volleyball team defeated county rival Johnsonburg in straight sets on Tuesday night in a match played at the ECCHS gymnasium. Elk won the first set 25-6, the second set 25-17, and the third set 25-11.
“I thought we controlled the match pretty well,” said ECC head coach Diane Gies. “We didn’t have too many unforced errors, which was a good thing. Those are things that we need to continue to improve on keeping under control.”

Lady Elkers host AML match

Ridgway girls golf hosted an AML match Tuesday afternoon at Laurel Mill Golf Club.
Katie Thompson finished with a 54 for Ridgway while teammate Shania Reitz had a 71.

Ridgway volleyball falls to Sheffield, 3-0

Ridgway volleyball lost 3-0 (25-19, 25-11, 25-13) to Sheffield Tuesday evening at Ridgway Area High School.
Ridgway opened the match by scoring three of the first four points in the opening set. A Sheffield mishit had Ridgway up 2-1, that was followed by an ace from Alanna Schiafone. Sheffield then scored seven of the next eight points to take an 8-4 lead.

Event to highlight addiction dangers

ST. MARYS – A luminary/prayer service will be held Saturday, Sept. 27 at 6 p.m. on the Diamond in St. Marys to educate the public on the dangers of addiction.
The event, organized by Patty Greene of Kersey, was inspired by her late son, Daniel Titchner, who died May 18.

Rocco taking superintendent reins next month

Robert Rocco, the current principal at the Brookville High School, is set to officially join the Ridgway Area School District as the superintendent on Oct. 27.
Rocco was hired as the new superintendent during a Sept. 13 RASD school board meeting, but the process to finalize his hiring and leave his current position delayed his start until late October.
Currently, he is in his 31st year serving within the education field, and he will join the RASD as a first-time superintendent.
