Progress is seen in addressing state land issues

The battle against the lack of fair taxes on state-owned forest and game lands continues to gain traction as the Pennsylvania State Land Tax Fairness Coalition pushes the issues to the forefront.

Elk County government officials last month pledged their support and unveiled a detailed map illustrating the amount of tax-exempt land within the county.

Reports indicate just 23 percent of the land in Elk County is generating local taxes at market value.

On Tuesday, officials reiterated their support pledge and discussed recent headway regarding the issues.

Council pledges support for Decker's Chapel

ST. MARYS – On Monday evening, St. Marys City Council unanimously approved to pledge their support and resources to the Decker's Chapel repair project.
Mary Kalinowski, executive director of the Elk County Historical Society, spoke to council about the status of Decker's Chapel located along the Million Dollar Highway in St. Marys.

USGS adjusts flow rate gauges

JOHNSONBURG – Toby Grzejka, a hydro technician of the United States Geological Survey, was in Johnsonburg Friday checking the accuracy of and adjusting the water flow rate gauge at the Johnsonburg USGS water-data site.
Grzejka said this is a service performed every three to four weeks to keep the gauges and data accurate.
The United States Geological Survey is a non-regulatory branch of the U.S. government meaning they do not make any laws or regulations. The organization is made up of scientists in four major branches of science.

Ohio man drowns in Cameron County

GIBSON TWP. – An Ohio man was killed after falling into the Driftwood Branch of the Susquehanna River in Cameron County on Saturday morning.
According to the Emporium-based state police, the incident occurred at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 4, on the Driftwood Branch of the Susquehanna River in the area of Tunnel Hill, Gibson Township, Cameron County.

Community takes the stage for Chloe Frank

Talented performers from throughout Elk County will join forces for a special night of entertainment as part of a benefit performance for Chloe Frank, a 12-year-old Ridgway student currently battling leukemia.
The Elk County Performs for Chloe event is taking place Friday, April 10 at Ridgway Area High School with curtain time set for 7 p.m.
Tickets are not required for the event, however donations will be accepted at the door.

Seneca confident of win in suit vs. Highland

HIGHLAND TWP. – Seneca Resources appears confident that it will win a federal lawsuit against Highland Township over an ordinance banning injection wells.
In documents filed in federal court in Erie, Seneca claims the township will be unable to cite any court cases that uphold ordinances similar to the one adopted in Highland.
The township Board of Supervisors in January 2013 adopted a "community bill of rights" ordinance.

Occupants hospitalized after 2-vehicle crash in Byrnedale

BYRNEDALE – A Jay Township crash early Friday afternoon hospitalized three people and caused disabling damage to two vehicles.
Elk Company 5 (Jay Township Fire Department), Bennetts Valley Ambulance, and St. Marys Ambulance were called out at 1:55 p.m. to the vicinity of 19863 Bennetts Valley Highway for a two-vehicle crash with injuries.
