Large brush fire reported along Bendigo Road

March 26, 2014

A large brush fire reportedly broke out Wednesday shortly after 4 p.m.
Initial reports indicated there were three separate fires affecting four to five acres near 2071 Bendigo Road in Ridgway Township.

Documentary features Sister Victoria's teachings

ST. MARYS – A documentary, "Lessons of Sister Victoria: Glimpses of life in the 50s" in St. Marys is being shown on Sunday at 2 p.m. in the Elk County Catholic High School auditorium. The event is open to the public with free admission. Any donations are being donated to the Elk County Benedictine Sisters.
The nearly two-hour documentary was produced by Gale Largey, a former St. Marys resident and 1962 graduate of Central High School who now resides in Wellsboro with his family. It explores the influence of a convent of Benedictine Sisters on life in the community of St. Marys.

Andrew Joseph Smith

Andrew Joseph Smith, 35, of 131 Comet Rd., St. Marys, died Wednesday morning, March 26, 2014 at his residence following a lengthy illness.
He was born July 18, 1978 in Buffalo, N.Y., son of Daniel A. and Patricia J. "Pat" Linehan Smith.
He resided in St. Marys since 1984 and was a 1996 graduate of St. Marys Area High School. He attended Slippery Rock University for two years.
He was a member of Queen of the World Church in St. Marys and worked at St. Marys Equipment for three years.

Solid Waste Authority planning for spring cleanup

The Elk County Solid Waste Authority is currently preparing for spring cleanup days in Elk County, where they will be assisting in the collection of electronics as well as used tires for municipalities throughout the county.
The authority, in conjunction with eLoop, will be hosting an electronics collection at the former municipal building located along Ridgway Drive in Ridgway Township. On Saturday, May 1, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., used electronics will be transported directly from the site by eLoop, who regularly collect electronics from the community recycling center in St. Marys.

Blaine Avenue house demolished

JOHNSONBURG – A house destroyed by fire in late December in Johnsonburg was razed recently.
The home, located in the 200 block of Blaine Avenue, went up in flames shortly after midnight on Dec. 20, 2013.
The call came in at 12:33 a.m. to 204 Blaine Ave., a residence situated along a borough road running parallel to the state Route 219 bypass.
George and Lisa Pontious of Johnsonburg reportedly resided at the residence, according to Corporal Greg Agosti, a fire marshal with the Ridgway-based State Police.

Improvement meets inconvenience on SR255 project

ST. MARYS – The general consensus of business owners along South St. Marys Street seems to be that the inconveniences are worthwhile in the end.
Steve and Kim Kunes, owners of Ace Auto, said that they lost 10 feet of their property to the state right-of-way but the retaining wall was rebuilt at no cost to them.
“We’re happy for the wall,” Steve said. “I wish they would have finished the wall and I wish they would have made the wall higher so I could have got some of my property back, but that’s the state. They took quite a bit.”

Georgenna E. Thomas

Georgenna E. Thomas, 81, formerly of 432 North Broad St., Ridgway, died Monday morning, March 24, 2014 at Elk Haven Nursing Home.
She was born Aug. 28, 1932 in Ridgway, daughter of the late George and Elizabeth (Huggler) Hostetlar. She married Lloyd R. Thomas on Nov. 27, 1970, he preceded her in death on Jan. 23, 2009. She had resided in Ridgway all her life and was a graduate of the Ridgway High School.
She was a member of the Faith United Church of Christ. Georgenna had been employed by Ridgway Color for 40 years.

SGL Warriors holding comedy show to benefit Relay for Life

ST. MARYS – The SGL Warriors Relay for Life team will be holding their 11th semi-annual comedy show, LOL Stand Up Comedy Show, on Saturday, March 29 at the Edgewood Hall. Doors for the event open at 6 p.m. and the show, which will feature three comedians, will begin around 8 p.m. The funds raised through the event, which also features various giveaways, are credited to the team's total, but all of the money goes toward the total for the Elk County Relay for Life.

McKay seeks reduced sentence

Former Ridgway Volunteer Fire Department treasurer Phillip McKay Jr., 61, will reportedly be seeking a reduced sentence for punishments stemming from a November conviction of device access fraud. Upon conviction, McKay was sentenced to five years probation and $10,698.43 in restitution payments.
