Kicking the can down the road

November 19, 2013

By Joseph Bell - Record Editor –

In an effort to avoid raising taxes for the first time in roughly a decade, members of the Ridgway Borough Council on Monday were pondering ways to cut spending and curbside recycling found its way to the chopping block.
Not a smart move.
While no official decisions were made during the Monday night meeting on either raising taxes or cutting curbside recycling, the writing is on the wall: Extensive cuts are needed to balance the budget, and even that might not be enough to avoid a tax hike.

A study released over the summer has confirmed what I think a lot of the population already knew: Turn signal neglect is causing millions of crashes each year, with no end in sight.

Somebody somewhere made another awful mistake.
Enter Mike Zilkofski, a family man living in Johnsonburg, working at the paper mill, working his way up, providing for his family.
He doubles as the resilient head coach of Johnsonburg's girls' varsity basketball team for the past five years, a squad of stars who have advanced to the playoffs in four of the last five seasons.

What was the big boom?

April 13, 2011

By Joseph Bell - Record Editor - Several Elk County residents placed calls to emergency services personnel and law enforcement agencies Sunday night regarding what they described as a loud "boom." Although the source of the noise was initially attributed to seismic testing for Marcellus Shale natural gas drilling, no cause or explanation has formally been discovered. According to several news sources, residents called 911 to report feeling and hearing a blast in Johnsonburg around 10:30 p.m. on Sunday evening.

Police officer Shawn Geci

January 24, 2011

By Joseph Bell - Record Editor - I think the public outcry regarding gaming violations against Ridgway police officer Shawn Geci has become nothing short but absolutely ridiculous. It has reached the point now where newspaper publications are being ridiculed for publishing the truth. This is just another shameful case where if someone hears something that is bad, they don't want to see it in a newspaper; let's just cover it up. The facts are that an officer of the law was cited for gaming violations and was tried in a court of law, and subsequently found guilty.

PA high school basketball needs a shot clock

January 12, 2011

By Joseph Bell – Record Editor – Enough is enough already. Far too often (at the local level in Pennsylvania high school basketball) we've seen an opposing team build a two-possession lead and attempt to run the clock out with four minutes left in the game. A shot clock for Pennsylvania high school basketball is long overdue... to be fair... let's say 40 seconds.
