Crusaders baseball defeats Kane Wolves, 13-7

The Elk County Catholic Crusader baseball team withstood a four-run first inning by the Kane Wolves Tuesday afternoon at Berwind Park as they rebounded for a 13-7 victory over the Wolves.
Kane jumped out to the 4-0 lead after the top of the first inning. Elk Catholic responded with three runs of their own in the home half of the inning. The Crusaders would score four in the second, five in the third and one in the fourth for a 13-4 lead. Kane scored two in the fifth and one in the seventh, making the final score 13-7.

Curwensville uses the long ball to drop Ramettes

JOHNSONBURG – Megan Barrett and Tiffany Carter both had a 5-RBI performance Tuesday as Curwensville defeated Johnsonburg, 17-1.
Curwensville's Tierra Shope scattered three hits in three innings of work, giving up one run while Taylor Goodman and Carter both hit home runs over the fence in the three-inning victory.
Curwensville put four runs up in the first inning to take the early advantage as the Lady Tide sent nine batters to the plate in the first and second innings, and another 14 batters in the third inning.

Ridgway softball falls 8-2 to Coudersport Lady Falcons

Ridgway softball lost 8-2 in a home matchup with Coudersport Friday afternoon at Francis S. Grandinetti Elementary School.
Coudersport would strike for a single run in the first inning as Brianna Majot would walk to lead off the game. Majot advanced to second and third on wild pitches before advancing home on a groundout off the bat of Kiersten Counts to give the Lady Falcons a 1-0 lead.

Johnsonburg baseball uses stellar pitching for 5-0 shutout

Pitching was the order of the day at Sandy Beach.
Johnsonburg had more than enough of it for the victory.
Johnsonburg used a trio of pitchers for a 5-0 Ram win over Ridgway baseball Thursday afternoon at Sandy Beach Recreational Park.
"Cole (Peterson) threw well, Mitchell (Holmberg) came in and threw a nice game, especially in the fourth inning getting out of it. Quinn (Luhr) pitched well," Johnsonburg coach Jeff Peterson said. "Defensively, we played real well again."
Johnsonburg pitching finished with a combined 13 strikeouts of Ridgway hitting.

Lady Elkers get bats swinging in 15-10 victory

JOHNSONBURG – A 17-hit outburst Thursday afternoon fueled a 15-10 win over rival Johnsonburg for the Lady Elkers' first win of the 2012 season.
Ridgway starting pitcher Taylor Roseto, going the distance for the first time this season after being on a pitch count due to injury rehabilitation, put up nine strikeouts and set down the side in order three times en route to her first win of the year.

JOHNSONBURG – Despite fielding a small team for the 2012 baseball season, the Johnsonburg Rams have made some noise early with solid pitching and a quick infield, and look to contend in the competitive District 9 scene.
"We knew our numbers were low but the players in the bottom of the lineup are starting to show some life at the plate and they've improved defensively," Johnsonburg head baseball coach Jeff Peterson said. "That's mixing well with the rest of the team. We definitely had a positive outlook at the beginning of the season and we knew we had real good pitching coming back.

As the new season has progressed, Ridgway softball is looking to lean on five seniors to help the Lady Elkers improve.
Ridgway’s seniors are Morgan Herzing, Sam Kovalyak, Sydney Kovalyak, Melissa Wehler and Ashley Viglione.
“We’re going to look to those five for senior leadership and step it up from what they did last year because a lot of them were successful last year,” Ridgway coach Gary Gerber II said.

New coach hoping to instill winning ways

JOHNSONBURG – A new face is at the helm of the Johnsonburg softball program as first-year head coach Jenny Lewis hopes to build on last season's playoff appearance.
"I started teaching in Johnsonburg last year and I had helped some of the pitchers last year," Lewis said. "When the opening came up I thought I might as well use what I have and try to coach."
A Brookville Area High School graduate, Lewis attended Indiana University of Pennsylvania and competed in softball at both the high school and collegiate levels. Her experience, she said, can be a double-edged sword.

Rams tennis starts out season with vast improvement

JOHNSONBURG – After a winless 2011 campaign, the Johnsonburg boys tennis team is already ahead of the curve for the 2012 season and are looking for bigger things to come as the spring progresses.
"We're looking to improve on last season after not winning a match and early on this year, we have won, and we have improved," said Johnsonburg head boys varsity tennis coach Gregg Dauber. "I hope to see some of our returning players stepping up and playing the way they should play to lead the way and lead the team because that's their job."
