Johnsonburg track and field looking strong for new season

JOHNSONBURG – The Johnsonburg track and field team heads into the new season with returning state qualifiers and improving younger athletes.
“We didn’t really lose too many seniors so we’re not really in a rebuilding year yet,” Johnsonburg coach Rene Timm said. “We’re still kind of picking up from where we were last year. We’re seeing a lot of improvement from kids that have been out the last couple years. Everyone just keeps getting better and better. We’ve got some new faces out too and some returning kids.”

Elk Catholic holds Winter Athletic Awards program

The Winter Athletic Awards program honoring the winter sports athletes at Elk County Catholic High School was held on Wednesday evening. The program opened with an invocation by Father Ross Miceli, followed by the welcome by ECC Athletic Club President Chris Schneider. Principal Sandy Florig gave an overview of the program, followed by acknowledgements by Athletic Director Aaron Straub.

Ridgway boys basketball honored with banquet

The Ridgway boys basketball team was honored with a banquet Monday night at Francis S. Grandinetti Elementary School.
Eric Matheson received both the Frank Clark Award and the Best Offensive Player Award.
"We had a lot of different high scorers at different times but Eric was the most steady," Ridgway varsity head coach Anthony Allegretto said.
Ben Jaques won the Herbie Lenze Award and fellow senior Dom Aiello won the Scholar-Athlete Award.
Aaron Sorge won the Most Outstanding Defensive Player Award.

Pair of Ram seniors receive Coach Fulton Memorial Scholarship

JOHNSONBURG – Johnsonburg seniors Joe Holmberg and Louie Imbrogno were announced as recipients of the 2nd Annual Coach Bill Fulton Memorial Scholarship.
The announcement was made yesterday at the Johnsonburg boys basketball banquet.
Fulton’s daughter, Chris Clark, was on hand along with one of her sisters, Staci Fulton.
“They wrote essays on what basketball means to them, on what Mr. Fulton means to them,” Johnsonburg varsity head coach Bill Shuey said.
Clark spoke of the honor it was to be at the banquet.

JOHNSONBURG – The Johnsonburg Ram boys basketball team was honored with a banquet Sunday afternoon at Johnsonburg Area High School.
Johnsonburg varsity head coach Bill Shuey announced the award winners which were based on statistics from the season. Senior Joe Holmberg won the rebounding award.
“Joe is a competitor. Joe will give you everything that he has, every minute of the game,” Shuey said. “He led the team in rebounds this year and had 545 points for his career, just a pleasure to coach. When the game was on the line, Joe was going to give it his all.”

Elk Catholic ends season with 66-47 loss to Lincoln Park

CLARION – The Elk County Catholic Crusaders basketball season came to a close on Tuesday night as they were defeated by the District 7-2 Lincoln Park Charter School by a 66-47 score in the second round of the PIAA State Class A Playoffs held at Clarion University.

Bush finishes eighth at 119 pounds, earns second PIAA medal

HERSHEY – Corey Bush of Ridgway finished eighth at 119 pounds at the PIAA Individual Wrestling Championships which concluded Saturday at Giant Center in Hershey.
“My goal was to finish higher, but a medal is pretty good,” Bush said.
It is Bush’s second state medal after a fourth-place finish last year at 103 pounds.
“It’s rare to get two and still have a shot at another one next year,” Gerber said. “I told him, 'Let’s do this again next season and finish higher up the podium.' It’s well within his reach and he works hard, I think it can happen.”

Elk County Catholic advances with 58-49 win over Serra Catholic

CLARION – The Elk County Catholic Crusaders advanced to the second round of the PIAA Class A Tournament with a 58-49 victory over the Serra Catholic Eagles Friday night at Clarion University’s Waldo Tippin Gymnasium.
The Crusaders will meet Lincoln Park Charter on Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m. at Clarion University. Lincoln Park defeated West Middlesex by a 70-35 score.
In last night’s game, the Crusaders used an 8-2 run late in the third period and outscored the Eagles 21-13 in the fourth quarter to record their victory.

Bishop Guilfoyle defeats Lady Crusaders 36-19

ALTOONA – The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusaders' season came to on end on Saturday afternoon at the Altoona Area High School gym, as they were defeated in the opening round of the girls' PIAA Class A State Championship tournament by two-time defending state champion Bishop Guilfoyle. The Lady Marauders handed the Lady Crusaders a 36-19 loss in that opening-round game.

Bush guaranteed state medal, Wolfe rounds out tournament

HERSHEY – Ridgway wrestler Corey Bush has guaranteed himself a state medal after action Friday at the PIAA Individual Wrestling Championships while Johnsonburg’s Jesse Wolfe goes home with a 1-2 finish.
Bush faces off against Nate Giorgio of Schulykill Valley in the seventh-place bout Saturday as that round begins at 12:30 p.m.
