Crusader baseball holds on for 8-6 win over Bradford

ST. MARYS – The Elk County Catholic Crusaders held on to defeat the Bradford Owls by an 8-6 score Tuesday afternoon at Berwind Park.
After five innings of play, ECC held an 8-1 lead. The Owls scored four in the sixth and one in the seventh making the final score 8-6.
“We held on to win that one,” said ECCHS coach Father Eric Vogt.
“Rick (Pearsall) came in to finish it but it was our timely hitting that won the game. Joe McLaughlin had a clutch two-run double in the fifth inning,” said the coach.
“In the game of baseball some days it goes your way and some days it doesn’t,” said Father Eric. “Bradford never gave up.”
Luke Daghir started on the mound for the Crusaders and worked four innings giving up three hits, walking one and striking out seven. Ben Daghir worked 1 1/3 inning giving up two hits, walking two and striking out three. Ricky Pearsall worked 1 2/3 innings giving up two hits, walking one and striking out one.
Connor Borowski started on the mound for Bradford and worked four innings giving up eight hits and striking out two. Randy Ruffner worked 2/3 of an inning giving up two hits and walking two. Kyle Viola issued two walks. Dan Rinfrette worked 1 1/3 innings giving up three walks.
The Crusaders had 10 hits in the game. Pearsall had three singles and Pat Brennen two. Eric Wehler, Ben Daghir, Brock McCullough and Joe McLaughlin all doubled. Jake Cortina had a single.
Bradford went in order in the top half of the first inning. Pearsall led off with a bunt single in the home half of the inning. Wehler doubled scoring Pearsall. With one out, Ben Daghir doubled scoring Wehler to give Elk a 2-0 lead.
Each team left two runners on base in the second inning. Bradford left two runners on base in the third inning. In the home half of the inning, McCullough doubled with two outs. A single by Cortina scored McCullough to make the score 3-0.
Bradford scored a run in the top of the fourth on a walk and two errors. Elk left a man on base in the home half of the inning.
The Owls left a man on base in the top of the sixth. With one out in the home half of the inning, Ben Daghir walked. McCullough reached base on a fielder’s choice erasing Daghir. McCullough stole second and moved to third on a throwing error. He scored on a passed ball. Cortina and Kyle Schneider both walked. A double by McLaughlin scored both Cortina and Schneider. A single by Brennen scored McLaughlin. Pearsall and Wehler walked to load the bases. Luke Daghir walked to score Brennen giving Elk Catholic the 8-1 lead.
The Owls scored four runs in the top of the sixth on three hits and two walks to make the score 8-5. The Crusaders left two men on base in their half of the inning.
With two outs, Anthony Zimbardi homered for the Owls making the final score 8-6 in favor of Elk Catholic.
ECC, now 11-2 on the season, will take on Kane Thursday in a doubleheader scheduled for Berwind Park with a 3:30 p.m. start.
