Crusaders come up short in state title bid
STATE COLLEGE – One step made all the difference in the Elk County Catholic Crusaders winning the PIAA Class A Baseball Championship 2-1 in regulation and losing it 2-1 to Devon Prep in extra innings. Senior Vincent Jacob led off the first inning with a double, went to third on a wild pitch, and came home as Ivan Wortman flied out for the second out of the inning. Jacob's run appeared to give the Crusaders an early lead, but Devon Prep checked to see if he had left early, and the umpires ruled that he had, negating the run and resulting in the third out for Elk Catholic. The Crusaders would take a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth on as Wortman was hit by a pitch and made his way around to score.
