Elk County Catholic’s Scott Krellner and Alex Herzing captured the District 9-AA tennis doubles championship at DuBois on Wednesday.
In the championship match, Krellner and Herzing defeated St. Marys Area’s Dalton Gennocro and Jarrod Lipsey 6-3, 7-5.
Krellner and Herzing reached the championship match by defeating Johnsonburg’s Shane Bickford and Nate Field 8-2 in the first round. In the quarterfinals they defeated Alec Bouch and Fabio Fortunato of Brockway 10-8. In the semifinals they defeated St. Marys Area’s Michael Fox and Evan Lepovetsky 6-4, 6-3.
Gennocro and Lipsey reached the finals by defeating Brockway’s Noah Serafini and Sam Hawkins 9-7 in the first round. In the quarterfinals Gennocro and Lipsey defeated Johnsonburg’s John Paul Allegretto and Mason Martonik 11-10 (8-6). In the semifinals, Lipsey and Gennocro defeated Elk Catholic’s Shane Mancuso and Drew Meyer 6-3, 6-3.
“It's pretty ridiculous actually if you think about it. We knew it was possible to be successful at all of those three, but to actually go out and do it consistently, successfully-- it's pretty amazing. It's a great testament to their drive, their determination, their focus, their concentration, all the above. They really impressed me this year,” said ECCHS coach Nick Caggiano.
“We knew we had two good doubles teams coming in. Drew and Shane are good, solid hitters. They made it to the semis. It wasn't their best day at the office, but they still had some great shots out there and it was a great experience for Drew for the next few seasons. Scott and Alex, what can I say, they're probably the two most unlikely pair to be the most likely-- but they've been a solid doubles team for us all throughout the whole season. The cool story about today was the two teams in the finals had to play the two preliminary rounds, St. Marys and ECC, and for those two teams to go all the way to the final and really have a good match in the final really says a lot about just their talent, their drive. St. Marys’ Dalton Gennocro and Jarrod Lipsey, they played a great match in the final and to get to the final they had a real journey. They put in some hard yards to get there. They're two tough opponents. They're two scrappy opponents. They're not going to let you have a lot of room, so you have to really take it from them to win the match, and we knew we had to do that and we were able to. We had to go for our shots. I think we executed nicely. It got a little tight at the end there, but we were able to pull ourselves over the finish line and I think we kind of willed ourselves to really make it through,” said Caggiano.
“I'm very proud of them. I'm very excited to go down to Hershey. I think it's going to be a good time. The experience is going to be great for them. I just feel it's good to have all three [titles.] We worked very hard for it. We really had to earn our successes here and it feels great to have the results pay off like that,” he added.
In Class AAA, DuBois Area’s Matt Fultz and Patrick Johnson defeated Punxsutawney’s Michael Blose and Tim Pearce 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 in the championship match.
Both the AAA and AA doubles champions advance to the PIAA tournament, scheduled for May 25 and 26 at the Hershey Racquet Club.
