Helen M. Powell

Helen M. Powell, 90, of 221 Cook Ave., Ridgway, died Monday morning, April 1, 2013 at Elk Haven Nursing Home.
She was born Dec. 30, 1922 in Ridgway, daughter of the late Maurice and Mary [Kielocker] MacDonald. She married Roland A. Powell on May 18, 1946, he preceded her in death on Nov. 25, 2009. She had resided in Ridgway since 2005 and was a former Silver Spring, Md. resident.
She was a member of St. Leo Catholic Church. She had been a past Den Mother for Cub Scouts and was a past Girl Scout Leader. Helen was a graduate of the Ridgway High School. She had been employed by Claussen Chemical Co., the Toledo Blade newspaper, and had worked for the Draft Board during World War II.
She is survived by the following children: Peter A. Powell [Sanda] of Chicago, Ill., Mary Rita Tappan of Rockville, Md., Thomas J. Powell [Lynn] of Elkton, Va., Elizabeth A. Gossart [John] of Alexandria, Va.; a daughter-in-law, Anne Powell of Cantonsville, Md.; 14 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; five sisters, Grace Gregory of St. Marys, Margie Robinson, Ann Kennedy, and Marianne Drathman, all of Ridgway, and Ruth Krizan [Bill] of Pittsburgh; four brothers, Neal MacDonald of Clearfield, Joseph MacDonald, Edward MacDonald [Evelyn], and James MacDonald [Judy], all of Ridgway; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by one son, Michael Powell; a granddaughter, Sarah Powell; and two brothers, John and William MacDonald.
A Mass of Christian Burial for Helen M. Powell will be concelebrated at St. Leo Catholic Church on Wednesday at 11 a.m. Co-officiating will be Fr. Brian E. Vossler, Pastor of St. Leo Catholic Church and Fr. Eric Vogt, O.S.B., Pastor of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Burial will follow at St. Leo Cemetery. Friends will be received at the Thompson Funeral Home on Tuesday evening from 6-8 p.m.
A Wake Service will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday evening at 6 p.m.
