Johnsonburg loses close tennis match to St. Marys

September 25, 2012

Johnsonburg junior Cheyenne Johnson returns a shot Tuesday afternoon against visiting St. Marys.

JOHNSONBURG – The Johnsonburg Ramettes lost a close 5-4 decision Tuesday afternoon on the tennis courts against visiting St. Marys.
The Ramettes went down 3-2 in singles competition and couldn't make up the deficit in doubles action.
"Even though we lost I still think we're the better team," said Johnsonburg head varsity girls tennis coach Gregg Dauber. "We didn't make matchups in doubles, we played our best from top to bottom, and I thought those were the rules in District 9 tennis.
"When you put the defending District 9 champion at No. 2 doubles, to me and to my team, it just isn't right but what can you do? We had our chances."
At No. 1 singles, St. Marys' Amy Orr defeated Riley Fannin 6-1, 6-3; at No. 2 singles, St. Marys' Aubrey Weisner defeated Cheyenne Johnson 6-0, 6-1; at No. 3 singles, St. Marys' Chelsea Agosti defeated Josie Del Rio 6-0, 6-1; at No. 4 singles, Johnsonburg's Paige Martonik won 6-2, 7-9, 10-3 over Danielle McCoy; and at No. 5 singles, Johnsonburg's Andrea Allegretto defeated Madison Squires 6-1, 6-2.
In doubles action, Agosti/Weisner won 8-4 over Martonik/Fannin; at No. 2 doubles, Orr/McCoy won 8-5 over Johnsonburg's Paige Secco and Johnson; at No. 3 doubles, Allegretto and Del Rio defeated St. Marys' Megan McCoy and Rebecca Aloi 8-1; and at No. 4 doubles, Johnsonburg's Megan Fannin and Olivia Perez-McGill won 8-2 over Samantha Forrester and Ashley Floravit.
