Johnsonburg softball wins suspended game over Lady Elkers

May 9, 2011

Ridgway's Taylor Roseto throws a pitch Monday during the Ramettes' 18-17 win in a game that originally started April 12 but was postponed midway through due to inclement weather.

JOHNSONBURG – The Ramettes waited nearly a month to finish the game and then they nearly lost it at the end.
Johnsonburg took a five-run lead into the bottom of the seventh inning but the Lady Elkers battled back and had the game-tying run aboard before a groundout ended the game.
The contest was originally halted after three-and-a-half innings April 12 as a torrential downpour in Ridgway halted play with Johnsonburg leading 11-7.
The Lady Elkers started strong and put up three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to cut the lead to 11-10. A two-out single by Taylor Roseto scored Breezy Mazur and Ashley Viglione to pull Ridgway to within one run of a tied game.
Pitcher Paige DeCecchis, who originally started the game April 12, was lifted due to an undisclosed injury as Kiana Myers came in to get the final out of the inning.
The Ramettes immediately responded in the top of the fifth inning as Tommi Wildnauer reached on an error at shortstop and Kiana Myers walked with Ridgway's Taylor Roseto on the hill in place of Morgan Herzing, who was credited with four innings for starting the game April 12.
With two on, Dani Jo Dwyer hit a single to score Wildnauer and Justis Myers tagged a two-run double to bring in Kiana Myers and Dwyer for the 14-10 advantage. Brittany Watts followed with a single to plate Justis Myers and an error at second base allowed Taylor Harvey to reach safely as Watts came around for the six-run lead.
After a free pass to Cassie Biondi and a Kassa Kocjancic groundout, another error at shortstop allowed Wildnauer to reach safely as Harvey scored for the 17-10 lead. An Elena Solorio strikeout ended an inning that saw 12 Ramettes bat.
But a resilient Ridgway team continued to put runs on the board. After Sam Kovalyak reached on a single and Sydney Kovalyak was hit by a pitch, Jenni Thomas hit a single to cut the lead to 17-11. An error at first base allowed Sydney Kovalyak to score as Melissa Wehler reached safely. Kiana Myers set down the next two batters as the Ramettes held a five-run lead.
WIth two outs in the top of the sixth inning, the Ramettes got what would eventually be the game-winner as Watts stroked a single to center field to bring in Dwyer, who walked for the third time.
The Lady Elkers added a run on the home half of the sixth inning as Jenni Thomas hit a single to bring in Sam Kovalyak to cut the lead to 18-13.
After Roseto escaped the top of the seventh inning unharmed, Ridgway began its comeback bid.
After a single by Wehler and a walk to Brianna Stenta, a groundout from Mazur shifted the runners into scoring position. A walk to Ashley Viglione loaded the bases and a flyout to the shortstop put two outs on the board.
Sam Kovalyak then got things started with a single to bring home Wehler and Stenta to cut the margin to 18-15. Sydney Kovalyak then followed with a two-out single to plate Viglione and Sam Kovalyak to cut the lead to 18-17 before a grounder to second sealed the deal.
