Joseph M. Sorge, 89, formerly of 268 Euclid Ave., Ridgway, died Monday morning, Nov. 11, 2013 at Elk Regional Health Center.
He was born Feb. 10, 1924 in Ridgway, son of the late Frank and Albina (Lupilo) Sorge. He married Kathleen M. Gerg on July 5, 1947 in St. Boniface Catholic Church in Kersey. She preceded him in death on April 25, 2009.
He had resided in Ridgway all his life and was a member of St. Leo Catholic Church, the Ridgway Fire Department Laurel Hook and Ladder and had been an assistant scout master with Troop 93 for over 25 years. He had served in the U.S. Navy during World War II from Nov. 16, 1942 to Jan. 12, 1946. He had retired from the Johnsonburg Paper Mill.
Joe is survived by two sons, Frank J. Sorge of Linden, Va., and Mark G. Sorge and his wife Leah of Ridgway; three grandsons, Aaron, Michael and Joseph Sorge; and numerous nieces and nephews. Besides his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Domenic (Bud), John and Michael Sorge; and six sisters, Lucy Viola, Mary Resci, Rose Ciminera, Amelia Ritucci, Ann Rosenhoover and Susie Crawford.
A Mass of Christian Burial for Joseph M. Sorge will be celebrated at St. Leo Catholic Church on Thursday, Nov. 14 at 11 a.m. with military honors accorded by the Ridgway Servicemen's Burial Detail. Officiating will be Fr. Brian E. Vossler, pastor of St. Leo Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Parklawn Memorial Gardens.
Friends will be received at the Thompson Funeral Home on Wednesday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. A Wake Service will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday evening, Nov. 13 at 7:45 p.m.
Memorials, if desired, can be made to the YMCA or to the Ridgway Public Library.
