ST. MARYS – The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusader basketball team successfully defended their Elk County Girls' Holiday Basketball Tournament crown by defeating the Johnsonburg Ramettes by a 44-27 score in the 2012 championship game played Saturday night at St. Marys Area High School.
The Lady Crusaders' defense was the key to the game as they limited the Ramettes to seven points in the second half of play.
"Holding Johnsonburg to seven points in the second half was definitely the key," said ECCHS coach Ken Pistner.
"We played well defensively two nights in a row, holding St. Marys to nine second-half points Friday and Johnsonburg to seven tonight," said Pistner. "We said coming in that the team that plays the best defense was going to win the tournament. I thought our post defense was really solid, holding (Brittany) Watts to two points for the game."
