Lady Elkers win consolation game

Ridgway softball rebounded to take the consolation game of the Elk County Softball Tournament, 14-7, over Johnsonburg Friday at Francis S. Grandinetti Elementary School. Ridgway scratched across a run in the first. Jenna Hoffman drew a walk and would later score on a long single from Ashley Viglione. The Lady Elkers then began to get the hitting going and pulled further ahead with a big 5-run inning. Jenni Thomas, Melissa Wehler and Hoffman all walked to load the bases, Bri Stenta followed with a single to score both Thomas and Wehler. Viglione smacked a single to center to score Hoffman and a Johnsonburg error in the infield off the bat of Breezy Mazur led to Stenta and Viglione scoring runs to put Ridgway up 6-0. Johnsonburg did respond with a 4-run third inning of its own. Katie Galsick singled and was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. After a strikeout, Kiana Myers walked and a Ridgway error led to Galsick scoring. Brittany Watts singled home both Kiana and Justis Myers and Watts scored as Taylor Harvey singled. Ridgway had its second straight big inning in the fourth with four more runs. Wehler led off with a walk and Stenta roped a 1-out double to put runners on second and third. A fielder's choice from Viglione plated Wehler and Mazur doubled home Viglione. Stenta scored on an error. Taylor Roseto doubled home Mazur as the Lady Elkers led 10-4 entering the bottom of the fourth. The Ramettes added a run in the home half of the fifth as Justis Myers walked and later scored on a Ridgway error. Ridgway then notched another 4-run inning in the seventh to put the game away. Thomas reached on a single to lead off and Hoffman was walked for the third time. Stenta reached on a fielder's choice. Viglione drove home Hoffman with a single and Mazur did the same to score Stenta. Sydney Kovalyak roped a single to plate Viglione and Roseto singled home Mazur. Justis Myers hit a 2-run home run in the bottom of the seventh to score baserunner Kiana Myers to round out the scoring. Roseto had 11 strikeouts in the win. "We started off rough the first game but I'm proud of the way we bounced back," Ridgway coach Gary Gerber II said. "Taylor pitched well, she pitched eight innings Thursday, it's a lot to ask of a freshman to bounce back and pitch a whole game." Viglione, Roseto and Mazur each had three hits, Viglione led the way with four RBI. Stenta and Roseto each had two RBI, Hoffman had three runs scored as did Stenta and Viglione. "Everyone's hitting the ball in the lineup," Gerber II said. "I think Ashley has an average over .500 this year."Justis Myers had three runs scored for the Ramettes. Ridgway is scheduled to play at Johnsonburg beginning at 4 p.m. on Monday. They are supposed to finish a suspended game, then play another full game after. "Our hitting wasn't there," Johnsonburg coach Melissa Myers said. "We needed that. They have a good pitcher. Our girls, we struggled against Brockway. I think if we'd have had hits, it would have been a different ballgame. Hopefully, we'll take the series 2-1."Individual statistics:Ridgway AB R H BIMelissa Wehler 3 2 1 0Jenna Hoffman 2 3 0 0Bri Stenta 5 3 2 2Ashley Viglione 5 3 3 4Breezy Mazur 5 2 3 1Sydney Kovalyak 5 0 1 1Taylor Roseto 3 0 3 2Jill Gaio 5 0 2 0Jenni Thomas 4 1 1 0Morgan Herzing 0 0 0 0Totals 37 14 16 102B: Stenta, Mazur, Roseto.
