Lois A. Wester Crandall, 92, died Saturday, Sept. 17, 2011.
She was born November 7, 1918 on the Lyons Road, Sherman, N.Y., the daughter of the late Henry and Ella Lyon Wester.
On Nov. 1, 1941, in Sherman, N.Y., she married Clyde R. Crandall, and he preceded her in death on March 22, 1994.
She was a 1935 graduate of Sherman Central School and a 1939 graduate of the New York State College for Teachers at Albany, N.Y. She subsequently did graduate work under Syracuse University and the New York State College at Fredonia. She taught for 20 years at Sherman Central School.
She was a member of the Mayville United Methodist Church, the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 898 at Sherman and then Unit 493 at Mayville, the Cha-Tau-Qua Squares and Cloud Niners Dance Clubs, the New York State Retired Teacherâ€™s Association, the Mayville Senior Citizens, the Sherman XYZ Senior Citizens, the Mayville Tuesday Club, and the Town of Chautauqua Loan Closet.
While members of the Continental Squares International Square Dance Club, she and her husband traveled to Hawaii, Spain, Egypt, Italy, China, Australia, and New Zealand, participating in square dances in each country.
She is survived by three daughters, Phyllis (Richard) Rothfuss of Rochester, N.Y., Mary Edwards of Rochester, N.Y., and Sally (Paul) Vavala of St. Marys; a son, Dale Crandall of Sherman, N.Y.; six grandchildren, Erin (Don) Poe of Boulder, Colo., Michael Oâ€™Brien of Rochester, N.Y., Dena (Maurice) Deats of Casa Grande, Ariz., Gerald Rothfuss of Apache Junction, Ariz., Mary (Christopher) Miller of Albuquerque, N.M., and Katie Chipman of Bergin, N.Y.; six great-grandchildren and one on the way; and one great-great-granddaughter.
Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a grandson, Peter Horsey, who died April 18, 2007; and an infant sister, Genevieve Ruth.
Funeral services for Lois A. Wester Crandall will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Freay Funeral Home in Mayville, N.Y. The Rev. Mark Parsons will officiate.
Burial will be in the Sherman Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday in the funeral home.
