JOHNSONBURG – Johnsonburg girls basketball won 46-41 over St. Marys Friday night at Johnsonburg Area High School in the season opener for both teams.
"It was an ugly win for as many turnovers as we had," Johnsonburg coach Mike Zilkofski said. "They were just out of sync. I practiced breaking the press all week and it was just out of sync. We threw the ball around."
With the game tied at 19, the teams alternated baskets until the game was knotted at 23. St. Marys point guard Adair Gennocro made a basket to push the Lady Dutch ahead 25-23. Chelsea Benson would hit a 3-pointer for Johnsonburg to put the Ramettes ahead with five minutes left. After a free throw, Kiana Hoohuli converted a 4-point play and then added another field goal as St. Marys led 31-27. Gennocro would score three straight points as the Lady Dutch had their biggest lead of the game at 34-27 near the midway point of the third quarter.
