Rams wrestling defeats Cameron County

December 12, 2012

Johnsonburg senior Caleb Garvey, top, works his opponent, Cameron County sophomore Robert Setzer in the 145-pound bout Tuesday night in Johnsonburg. Garvey battled to win by fall with just 31 seconds left in the match.

JOHNSONBURG – Needing bonus points all throughout the night along with a little help after forfeiting three upper weights, the Johnsonburg Rams managed to start their dual meet season off on the right foot in a 37-36 win over Cameron County.
The match was decided on a tiebreaker which went all the way down to "Criteria H," which grants the victory to the team that has the "greater number of first points in each match." Cumulatively, the Rams scored four first-point takedowns for eight points while the Red Raiders notched three first-point takedowns for six points.
"It feels good to start the season off with a win, especially having to go through all the tiebreaker criteria to see who won," said second-year head varsity wrestling coach Mike Votano following the victory. "Shane Bickford, our first-year wrestler, came through with a pin [Tuesday] and that really changed the whole match and that was huge on his part."
