Three advance to regional semis

SHARON – Three area wrestlers have made the semifinals and Ridgway senior D.J. Skraba earned his 100th win at the Class AA Northwest Regional Championships Friday at Sharon High School.
D.J. Skraba picked up his 100th career victory with a 4-0 decision in his first-round consolation match over Josh Lewis of Youngsville. Skraba had previously lost a 5-4 decision at 160 pounds to Ryan Kio of Port Allegany in the quarterfinals.
Corey Bush (119) of Ridgway is in the semis along with Jesse Wolfe (125) and Max Zimmerman (135) of Johnsonburg.
Bush opened in the quarterfinals against Mason McCollum of Reynolds after the bracket was redone prior to Friday’s open of the tournament. Bush scored a 12-0 decision over McCollum to advance to the semifinals where he will take on Jarray Norris (33-2) of Sharon.
Wolfe opened in the quarterfinals against Adam Sallot of Harborcreek. Wolfe wrestled well to take a 6-1 decision and advance to the semifinals to face Nate Diaz (23-4) of Greenville.
Zimmerman started in the preliminary bout against Casey Voohis of North East, advancing with a 3-1 decision. Zimmerman scored a takedown halfway through the first period to take a 2-0 lead. Zimmerman opened the second period from the top position, Voohis was able to secure the escape 30 seconds into the period to cut the margin to 2-1. Zimmerman opened from the bottom position in the third period with a 2-1 advantage. He would escape halfway through the third period to up the margin to 3-1. Zimmerman followed with a pinfall victory over Vinnie Vignone of Langley in the quarterfinals in a time of 3:57. That sets up a matchup against Adam Matthews (37-6) of Reynolds.
Also in 135-pound action, Slade Horner of Ridgway opened in the quarterfinals against Riley Smith of Fort LeBoeuf, losing a 5-1 decision. Horner dropped to face Trey Maher of Grove City and advanced to the second round of consolations with a 9-0 major decision.
In the 140-pound bracket, Kyle Caggiano of Ridgway opened against Garret Smith of Seneca. Smith took down Caggiano on the edge of the mat with 13 seconds left in the first period to take a 2-0 lead. Caggiano surrendered an escape to start the second period to trail 3-0. Caggiano trailed 5-1 at the end of the second period and lost a 7-2 decision. Caggiano dropped to face and beat Chet Simoni of Grove City with a 9-3 decision.
Jake Himes of Ridgway opened in the 152-pound bracket against Randy Perkins of Greenville, advancing to the quarterfinals with a 4-3 decision. Himes lost an 8-1 decision to Alex Gular of Port Allegany in the quarterfinals and faces Cole Shirey of Redbank Valley in the first round of consolations.
Chad Quail at 215 pounds lost with an 8-0 decision to Greg Reinke of Union City in the prelims. Quail then faced Vernon Jordan of Westinghouse in the first round of consolations. Quail pinned Jordan in a time of 1:20 to move on to the second round of consolations.
