Wilcox American Legion team dominates Smethport

June 9, 2011

Kyle Sheldon hits an RBI single for the Wilcox American Legion baseball team in a 10-0 win over Smethport.

WILCOX – It was clear from the opening inning who had control of Wednesday's American Legion baseball game.
Wilcox scored four times in the first inning and was dominant throughout in a 10-0, 5-inning win over Smethport at Jones Township Community Park.
"Good pitching, good defense. We had real good defense again," Johnsonburg coach Jeff Peterson said. "Everybody participated, everybody on the team had a chance to play. We're hitting the ball, we're being aggressive on the bases. We're playing well on defense. That's what keeps you in the game, defense keeps you in the game.
"I think we're looking good, we're playing solid," coach Peterson said. "We're starting to come together as a real unit."
Jesse Reynolds singled with one out to right field in the home half of the first inning and then stole second, one of six stolen bases on the game for Wilcox. Mitchell Holmberg singled home Reynolds for the game's first run. Josh Mitchell then hit a rocket through the right side of the infield for a single. Joe Holmberg was walked to load the bases and after a strikeout, Zac Luhr walked to plate Mitchell Holmberg. Quinn Luhr lined a singled to score Mitchell and Joe Holmberg as Wilcox (3-0) had a 4-0 lead at the end of the first inning.
"That's what we like to do, we always say we got to get on it right now and set the tempo in the first inning," coach Peterson said. "We got to get after it and play aggressive. It went well, we got the hits where we needed them. We're running the bases aggressive. The kids are making plays."
Cole Peterson had three strikeouts in the second inning as Smethport only mustered a 2-out single from Kenny Doutt. He then led off the home half of the frame by reaching on a Smethport error. Peterson subsequently stole second base. Jesse Reynolds reached on another Smethport error to put runners at first and second. Mitchell Holmberg hit into a fielder's choice which moved Peterson to third and erased Reynolds from the bases. A stolen base from Mitchell Holmberg moved two runners into scoring position and Mitchell brought Cole Peterson and Mitchell Holmberg home with a 2-run single. Mitchell moved all the way to third on an overthrow to home from Smethport. Joe Holmberg grounded out to second and scored Mitchell in the process to give Wilcox a 7-0 lead after two innings.
After a scoreless third inning, Wilcox added a pair of runs in the fourth inning. Cole Peterson walked and stole second. Reynolds then hit an infield single and Mitchell Holmberg singled home Peterson for Wilcox's eighth run. Mitchell hit into a fielder's choice which took Holmberg off the bases. Pinch hitter Kyle Sheldon lined a single up the middle to score Reynolds and make the lead 9-0.
In Smethport's half of the fifth, Garrett Drabert reached on a Wilcox error to lead off. Kolin Strawcutter then hit a looping flyball in between shortstop and left field. Cole Peterson, now playing at shortstop after starting at pitcher, showed off his range and made an over-the-shoulder catch in left field. Drabert was nearly to second base as he thought the ball was going to drop in for a hit, he was easily doubled off at first base for a double play.
"An awesome catch, he's a phenomenal shortstop," coach Peterson said. "He covers a lot of ground, that was a nice catch. An over-the-shoulder catch, that's a base hit. He's just as smooth as can be, makes it look like an everyday catch and then throws him out at first base. A nice play, a big play. They could have got something going there. 9-0, the game is still not over. The game is never over, I don't care who you are playing. Any team gets some kind of momentum, it can change in a hurry. We've been in that situation."
Wilcox finished the game off with a 2-out rally. Cole Peterson singled and then stole second base for the third time. Reynolds drove him home with a single to right field to enact the 10-run rule. Reynolds finished 3-for-4 with one RBI, two runs scored and one stolen bases.
Seven different players had RBI for Wilcox. Mitchell Holmberg, Mitchell and Quinn Luhr each had two to lead the team. Mitchell Holmberg and Mitchell each had a pair of hits.
Cole Peterson threw three scoreless innings with a walk and five strikeouts. He allowed just one hit. Jesse Reynolds pitched a scoreless fourth and Mitchell Holmberg pitched a scoreless fifth inning.
"Strike-throwers, if you throw strikes, they put it in play, your defense, you have a good defense, it's going to keep you in games," coach Peterson said. "You don't walk and give them runs, it'll keep you in games."
Wilcox is scheduled to play at Bradford Friday for a 6 p.m. game.
