Turner returns home2014-09-20T15:06:16-04:002014-09-20T15:06:16-04:00Copyright 2014 Ridgway RecordTurner, who grew up in Cameron and Potter counties, died Nov. 22, 1952 at just 24 years old when the C-124 Globemaster plane that he was traveling in crashed into Mount Gannet in the Chugach Mountains of Alaska.Severe weather at the time prevented any search from being executed until three days after the crash; aircraft and seas vessels searched for three days before plane wreckage was found Nov. 28, 1952.At the time, the glacier was already covered by several feet of snow, and snowdrifts had reached over 100 feet high in areas near the wreckage. The difficult conditions prevented recovery as victims' families were told there would be no remains to bury.An Alaska National Guard Black Hawk chopper on a training mission discovered crash remains on the surface of Colony Glacier on June 9, 2012. Reports indicate this site is nearly 14 miles from the 1952 crash location. Less than three weeks later, the U.S. military announced the discovery of the wreckage. The Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command took over the operations and announced that the remains of 17 of the victims had been identified-- including Turner.Turner was born Jan. 17, 1928 in First Fork, son of the late Wilbur Edward and Pearl Mae Caldwell Turner. A 1946 Coudersport High School graduate, Turner joined the Air Force and graduated from the Air Force Navigation School in 1951. He served in the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Air Force from 1946 to 1952.He is survived by his sister, Mary Elizabeth Turner May, and many nieces and nephews.A memorial service was held Saturday at the Park United Methodist Church in Coudersport. Turner was then escorted by members of the Patriot Guard Riders and the Allegheny Mountain (Emporium) chapter of the Nam Knights on motorcycles to Gilmore Cemetery in Grove Township, near Sinnemahoning State Park.Ridgway, PAJoseph Bell1st Lt.
