2020 Ridgway Elker and Kane Wolves football schedules

Bob Parana - Staff Writer

The District 9 Large School Division will begin its third season Friday, Aug. 28. When the Ridgway Elkers kickoff that night in St. Marys, they will be striving for a third-straight Division title, a third-straight District 9 Class AA championship, and a fifth-straight District crown (won the Class A title in 2016 and 2017). The team went 9-1 in the 2019 regular season and picked up playoff wins over Karns City and Clarion before their season ending loss to Wilmington in PIAA playoff action at Slippery Rock University. Faithful Elkers fans will have less travel than last season when road round-trips to Kane, Moniteau, Punxsutawney, Karns City and Union accounted for 660 miles. Besides St. Marys the maroon-and-white will travel to Bradford, Clarion, Brookville, and new addition DuBois which has taken the spot of Brockway who dropped down to the Small School South Division. Round-trip from the Ridgway High School to the out of town venues is 378 miles this upcoming season. Kane, Punxsutawney, and Penns Valley who replaces Union-AC-Valley as the non-league 10th week match-up will be played in Ridgway. Games with Moniteau and Karns City will be played in Johnsonburg. Some schedules are showing that Clarion-Central is a home game, but Elkers head coach Mark Heindl confirmed the game will be at Clarion. The Bobcats changed their name to Wildcats for the 2020 season. The team co-ops Clarion, Clarion-Limestone, and North Clarion thus the change to Central-Clarion for its second season of joining forces. The ten Large School teams will play each other to decide the division championship. DuBois will throw a bit of a monkey wrench into the upcoming season. The school will play traditional opening rival Clearfield in the first week of action. Ridgway, Kane, St. Marys, Bradford, Moniteau, Central-Clarion (Clarion/Clarion-Limestone co-op), Punxsutawney, and Brookville will have their division play end October 23 while the Beavers travel to division foe Karns City the following week.
The Kane Wolves open their season at home Aug. 28 when they host Moniteau. Bradford, Punxsutawney, Karns City, and Brookville will also visit Paul R. Miller Stadium. The school currently has just nine games on its schedule as they have had the past two seasons. A non-division 10th game has not yet been ruled out. The Wolves will travel to Ridgway, DuBois, Clarion-Central, and St. Marys. Fans of the red-white-and-blue will travel 486 round-trip miles to the out of town stadiums. After finishing 2-7 in 2018, Kane went 6-5 last season and advanced to the District 9 Class AA semi-finals.
