Girls and Boys teams from New York and Pennsylvania were scheduled to square off in the Big 30 Athletic Fund’s 6th Annual Big 30 Basketball Classic Sunday, March 29. The event which will be held at Portville Central School in New York is currently on hold due to the COVID-19 pandemic that has closed schools in both states. Lady Elkers Gabbi Rohr and Christina Fullum, Kane’s Emily Bucheit, and Kaylee Muccio, Megan Quesenbury, and Allison Schlimm of St. Marys were among members of the PA girls’ team. Matt Dush and Zack Zameroski of the Elkers, Austin Green of Johnsonburg, Kane’s Chad Greville, Regis Wortman and Carter Lindemuth of Elk County Catholic, and Cahill Parrish of St. Marys were among the 12 players making up the Keystone State boys’ team. According to the President of the Big 30 Athletic Fund Brian Green, the organization is still hoping to play the games featuring seniors from both states.
“For now the game is postponed indefinitely. We’re waiting to see if the world ever returns to normal,” he said.
While organizers are trying to stay positive time may be running out, “I think maybe the worst case scenario the farthest we would go would be the middle of June,” Green said. “The reason we haven’t officially cancelled is that we’ve had a handful of kids that have reached out asking us to please not cancel the game."
