Frank Varischetti Game date changed

If the threat of the COVID-19 is downgraded several area high school graduate football players will get the opportunity to play two all-star games in six days.The 5th Frank Varischetti All-Star game has been moved from its initial date of Friday, June 26 to Friday, Aug. 7. The Big 30 Committee is going ahead with their plans to the play the 47th Charities Classic Saturday, Aug. 1. The Varischetti game played in Brockway pits all-stars from former Allegheny Mountain League (AML) schools vs. graduated all-stars from the former Keystone Shortway Athletic Conference (KSAC) schools. The Big 30 contest is a clash of Pennsylvania vs. New York graduates played at Parkway Field in Bradford. Varischetti All-Star game manager Nick Hoffman released the following about the date change.“Our decision combine our desire to play the game and honor the outstanding scholar-athletes who have been selected to play and our commitment to do so in the most safe and responsible way possible in light of the COVID-19 situation. We hope playing the game at a later date means players along with their families, friends, and fans will have the opportunity for a much-needed respite.”The Big 30 Committee is currently releasing the names of three or four players weekly. The Varischetti all-stars have not yet been released. AML schools include Ridgway, Kane, Elk County Catholic, Cameron County, Coudersport, Curwensville, Otto-Eldred, Port Allegany, Sheffield, and Smethport. KSAC schools include St. Marys, Brookville, Clarion, Karns City, Keystone, Moniteau, Punxsutawney, Redbank Valley, and Union/AC-Valley. Thus far Ridgway’s Robert Briggs, Hayden Haupright, Greg Simon, Paul Gresco, and Jake Wickett have been named to the Big 30 squad. Also suiting up for Pennsylvania are Teddy Race, Jake Alcorn, Kevin Scharba, and Aaron Hottel from Kane; ECC’s Jered Emmert, Stephen Bobby, Anthony Gerg, Leo Gregory, and John Wittman; and Jake Walter, Gage Burford, and Forest Cressley of St. Marys. Ridgway Head Coach Mark Heindl and his assistants Mickey Delhunty, Rick Viglione, Jack Kifer, and Tony Difillipi will coach the PA squad.
