Ridgway American Legion falls 22-6 to Smethport

Missing four key players, Ridgway’s American Legion Team saw their record go to 8-6 with a 22-6 drubbing at the hands of Smethport at Sandy Beach Recreation Park.
Post 208 prevented the game from ending in the 5th, when they plated 4 runs to make it 12-6. Smethport then scored two runs in the sixth and seven the seventh innings.
“Obviously missing key players and errors impacted us tonight,” said Ridgway manager Ryan LaBenne, who saw his three-game win streak snapped (4-games if you count last night’s forfeit by Fox).
Ridgway used four pitchers in the contest, Wade Steiss went the first three. Jake Wicket, Paul Gresco and Josh Thorwart also hurled for Post 208.
Smethport pounded out 17 hits, were put on base via the walk 11 times and took advantage of seven errors (unofficial stats).
“Mistakes at key times, hurt us tonight. It was just one of those nights that you just have to put behind you,” said Manager LaBenne.
Smethport tallied five runs in the first, one each in innings two and three, four in inning four, one in the fifth, two in the sixth and seven in the final frame.
Ridgway scored two in the first and four in the fifth, which prevented the game from ending under the 10-run rule.
For Ridgway, Steiss had three hits, Justin Kazmierski, Max Cowan, Gresco, Jake Wicket and Aaron Pura also had hits. Wicket hit a two-run double in the fifth (unofficial stats).
Playoffs are set to start next Friday, however, Ridgway still has four regular season games left. They will play a unique doubleheader Sunday. The will play in Wilcox at 2 pm, then travel north to Bradford for a 6 pm start. They will play in St. Marys, Tuesday, then host St. Marys Wednesday.
In looking at Sunday’s games, said LaBenne, “We hope to have some of our key players back. It will help as we wind the season down.” It was noted that any game that are rained out will not be made up. the last game of the regular season is set for Thursday, July 12 - with Bradford at Smethport. That game will complete the seedings for the year-end tournament starting Friday.
