The heptathlon is seven grueling events competed in by a single athlete. Events include the 100 meter hurdles, high jump, shot put, 200 meter run, long jump, javelin and the 800 meter run.
Athletes who compete in the event can run, jump and throw at the highest level. The heptathletes are the most well rounded, athletic athletes on the entire team track and field team.
Gabbi Benninger, a 2014 graduate of Ridgway Area High School, is a former Division 1 heptathlete and triple jumper for Duquesne University.
Benninger was one of the most involved athletes she could be in her time at Ridgway Area High School. She played four different sports, including soccer, track and field, cheerleading and gymnastics.
